Spencer Barefield Anthony Holland Tani Tabbal – Transdimensional Space Window LP
Detroit's own 2 members of Griot Galaxy makes this an improv dream.   recomended Detroit Free Jazz
A nice set from these latter day Detroit free music explorers, with a spiritual vibe and a varied approach to improvisation that isn't afraid to groove at moments, but also involves some nice textural dynamic playing in a very post AACM mode. Anthony Holland plays reeds, Tani Tabal tablas and trap drums and Spencer Barefield a variety of guitars. 3 lengthy pieces and 1 shorter one: "Inbetween Song", "Roscoe Mitchell -- Clouds Taking Pictures Of Birds", the 6-part "Transdimensional Space Window Suite" and "Dawudaphone Dance"

Tani Tabbal is a jazz drummer who has worked with Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, and Cassandra Wilson
By the age of 14 Tabbal was playing professionally, performing with Oscar Brown Jr. In his teens he also performed with Phil Cohran and the Sun Ra Arkestra.

Tabbal has recorded, performed and toured with a wide range of musicians, including Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Richard Davis, David Murray, James Carter, Geri Allen, Karl Berger, Evan Parker, Leroy Jenkins, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Dewey Redman and Cassandra Wilson.

He was also an integral part of the rhythm section of Detroit group Griot Galaxy, along with bassist Jaribu Shahid. In addition, he was in the percussion ensemble "Pieces of Time" along with Andrew Cyrille, Famoudou Don Moye, and Obo Addy

A. Spencer Barefield (born May 27, 1953 in Detroit) is an American jazz musician (guitar, composition). His primary instrument is an acoustic guitar with six additional, much shorter strings running diagonally below the others above the sound hole; he also plays a modified 12-string guitar, an African harp, and piano.

Barefield's father was a pianist and violinist, and his mother played the piano. He abandoned medical school to become a musician, initially performing with Anthony Braxton, Leroy Jenkins, and the New Chamber Jazz Quintet.

In 1978, Barefield founded the Creative Arts Collective in Detroit, which served as a platform for creative jazz in his hometown for several decades.[1] In 1980, he became a member of Roscoe Mitchell's Sound Ensemble (later Sound and Space Ensemble), with whom he toured internationally. With wind player Anthony Holland and Tani Tabbal, he formed a collaborative trio (Transdimensional Space Window), which performed at the Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen in 1984 and also recorded for Sound Aspects. As the leader of another trio with Oliver Lake and Andrew Cyrille, he performed at the Leverkusener Jazztage in 1989 (recorded by Sound Aspects). The following year, he performed with the trio in Detroit and formed a duo with Lake. In 1990 he also released his debut album Xenogenesis 2000 (with James Carter), followed by the album Live-Detroit in 1998 and Soul Steppin' Through the Fabulous Ruins in 2004. In 1995 he toured Europe with Lester Bowie, then again with Roscoe Mitchell. He also performed as an unaccompanied soloist. In 2012 he contributed to the album Detroit Jazz City (Blue Note Records).[2] He can also be heard on recordings by Stephen Rush and Sun Ra (Beyond the Purple Star Zone).

After participating in Mitchell's Creative Arts Collective in East Lansing, Michigan, in the mid-1970s, Barefield founded a Detroit branch of the Creative Arts Collective in 1978, which he directed[3] and for which he organized annual concerts at the Detroit Institute of Arts (until its funding was discontinued around 1992). Recordings of another trio with Tabbal and Douglas Ewart were made there (Beneath Detroit, released in 2010).

Anthony Holland worked with Leroy Jenkins in the late 1970s and with Spencer Barefield and Tani Tabal in the early 1980s, performing as a trio at the Konfrontationen festival in Nickelsdorf. He was also a member of the band Griot Galaxy, led by Faruq Z. Bey. In the field of jazz, he participated in ten recording sessions between 1981 and 2000.[1] In 2000, he also recorded with Talismah Bey and Marcus Belgrave (Live! Ragtime Lagacy
