A 1st pressing of SPIRIT on the CBS label from 1968. Matrix A2/B1. Now, remember this LP sold in tiny quantities at 1st issue. Only now is it revered as a prog-rock classic of the sixties. The heavy set vinyl comes housed in an Ernest J Day cover without stereo sticker [these are likely to be amongst the very earliest].
Vinyl (Ex+) Ok, this is one seriously well preserved record. It has clearly seen very light use and remains in fantastic condition - just look at those label shots! Under close inspection we struggled to make out a single mark. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an, at least, EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Believe me when I say you really need to concentrate on finding a top-copy of this LP. Anything which has seen moderate use is just not going to deliver on the audio front. A lot of it is quite jazzy and very low-key acoustic. Interference will ruin the ambience of this LP. Thankfully this copy is preserved like no other I've seen. Intros and inbetweens are silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. Even those delicate drum-rolls and high hats are perfectly resolved. Interference is almost totally absent. All we could detect was a couple of crackles in a couple of isolated moments. You are not going to find a copy that plays this well without quite an extensive search. Remember too, this LP peaked at #31 on the billboard charts in the US...how many UK copies can there be at 1st press? FINAL UPGRADE on audio...
Cover (Vg+) This is my grading for the LP and in terms of preservation it actually grades higher. BUT look at the rear - someone with an artistic flair has added colour to the rear. So, grading on this cover is totally subjective YOU need to decide how this affects grading and make your own decision. Personally I was quite impressed by whoever added the colour because it has been done with an evenness and accuracy that I for one most certainly could not replicate - ha! The front cover is in nigh on perfect condition with only one slight crease. The rear has escaped the usual fading or marking. Edge wear is very light and the openings are still sharp. The spine is pretty much entirely intact. Overall the cover retains perfect rigidity and lies totally flat.
