Description
Here's a remarkable set of acetates containing previously unknown material that was recorded for the 1958 film St. Louis Blues. According to handwritten notes on the sleeves, the three discs were cut at the Paramount-affiliated Electro-Vox Studios on October 22 of 1957, more than six months before the movie's theatrical release. Two of the discs feature Mahalia Jackson performing alternate takes of "Steal Away" and "Hist The Window, Noah" that are different from the performances in the film; arranger Nelson Riddle can be heard speaking at the start of each of these. The other disc contains obscure W.C. Handy songs performed by a male chorus: "Got No More Home 'Dan a Dawg," "Yellow Dog Work Song" and "Goin' to See My Sarah." All three discs are in VG+ condition and play nicely with some occasional noise and hiss. All three discs are 12" and play at 33 rpm.
