ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome gatefold jacket from Fontana (876.001 FY, French pressing, red/silver label, stereo, heavy gatefold jacket / cloth spine) features Isaac Stern's passionate account of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, recorded with conductor Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in the warm acoustics of St. George Hotel, Brooklyn, New York, on 20 April 1959. This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here – the sound is truly first rate.
The Stern/Bernstein partnership was a potent one, each inspiring the other to greater heights. Quite why Stern's LPs are not collected quite so avidly as those of Grumiaux, Szeryng, Milstein, et al. is a mystery. Any number of his recordings – e.g., the Hindemith and Barber Violin Concertos (both also with Bernstein!) are unsurpassed on record, and this supreme reading of Beethoven's Op. 61 is everything one could wish for – superb!
There are excellent liner notes on the left interior panel of the gatefold jacket by Marcel Marnat, printed in French only. The striking cover photo of Stern is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy gatefold jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight creasing and ringwear, as well as minor bumping/wear at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a truly excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
