Beautiful original 2-eye pressing of Reich's rare first solo album, with 2 great early electronic minimalism classics. Violin Phase has Paul Zukofsky playing live against his own prerecorded tracks to create a dense texture made up of several iterations of a simple 10-note phrase shifting in and out of phase with each other. It's Gonna Rain uses Reich's phase shifting technique to create a gradually varying polyrhythmic text-sound drone out of multiple tape loops of the same vocal "sample" falling slightly out-of-sync with each other. With notes by Sonic Arts Union composer David Behrman. Essential!

Steve Reich studied with William Bergsma, Vincent Persichetti, Luciano Berio, and Darius Milhaud, and is associated with the late 20th century 'minimalism' movement along with Philip Glass, La Monte Young, John Adams, Terry Riley, Charlemagne Palestine, Phill Niblock, and Tony Conrad. This should also be of interest to fans of text-sound composers like Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Sten Hanson, Bengt-Emil Johnson, Jon Appleton, Charles Amirkhanian, Robert Ashley, Brion Gysin, Henri Chopin, and Bernard Heidsieck.
