For sale: super-rare Velvet Underground single.
Canadian release of their seminal, pre-album single "Sunday Morning / Femme Fatale" (Verve V-10466X). VG copy (assessed by two reputable local record dealers and myself).
I was turned on to the Velvet Underground as a 16-year-old in Toronto in 1983, and have been a fan ever since. Bought this copy in the early/mid-1980s in Toronto at a shop specializing in singles (Kops Records), and have treasured it, only playing it on rare occassions (probably not more than six or seven times since buying it). Plays great, despite some surface markings (that don't come off with record cleaner: see images). Some sibilance and a bit of crackle (really only noticeable before the song starts), and there is one pop on the B-side (Femme Fatale). Had this not appreciated in value so much since I first bought it, I'd probably still keep it, but it's time to pass it on to a more dedicated collector of the Velvet Underground looking to complete their collection. By all accounts online, this is the rarest version of this particular single ever issued, and I could only find two examples of it having sold previously on eBay, and none on Discogs. One of those sales referred to a dealer in Toronto where that owner and the only other one he knew of both bought their copies, and I'd be willing to bet it's where I bought mine, too.
Originally issued in a plain sleeve, this will come in a plain (non-original) sleeve. The pictures show the condition of the label is excellent, and while there were a few pieces of fluff on the disc when I scanned it, you can see that the vinyl itself is overall in pretty great shape. But listen to the mp3s for a better sense of how it plays. They were generated through Garageband (24 bit) -> Apple Lossless -> CD Spin Doctor -> iTunes -> 320 kbps mp3; I did not apply any filters, EQ, or editing to the tracks along the way.
Due to the rarity and value of this record, I will only ship by registered courier, fully insured. I plan to build a custom box with Sintra (similar to Gator board) to keep the disc safe from shocks or bends, and suspend this box within another surrounded by packing peanuts or the equivalent. It may cost a bit more, but I want to be absolutely sure this makes it to the lucky buyer in the same shape it's in now. I have listed Canada Post as the shipper (mainly to satisfy eBay's requirement to list one), but would be happy to work with the eventual buyer to find one that works for both of us (FedEx or other qualified international courier preferred, especially as Canada Post is having labour issues that might lead to a disruption of services. Work it out, people!). Should the end price be over $750, I will split the shipping costs 50/50 with the buyer; if it passes $1,000, I will ship for free. Sizes and weights are estimated at this point, and may be smaller and lighter when packaged, but if over my estimate, buyer will only be billed for my original estimated size and weight.
This record is bound to make a serious VU collector very happy, and that would make me happy too.
