PLEASE CONSIDER THAT IN THESE EBAY AUCTIONS I USE A STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR MAGAZINE GRADING SYSTEM THAT CAN'T DISAPPOINT ANYONE BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN THAT ,FOR EXAMPLE, A VG+ COVER OR A VG+ VINYL IT'S EQUIVALENT TO "BAD CONDITIONS" BUT SIMPLY THAT MY GRADE IT'S STRICT AND PROBABLY EQUIVALENT TO AN EX OF SOMEONE ELSE WITH NOT A SO STRICT GRADE. I HAVE SOLD IN THESE AUCTIONS EX- RECORDS THAT WERE SURELLY M- COPIES BUT I PREFERE TO BE STRICT TO AVOID ANY DISAPPOINTEMENT BECAUSE I TAKE GREAT CARE OF MY REPUTATION.
Record Collector Magazine Grading System MINT The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
graded VG++/EX for a strict Record Collector magazine grading system
label: The Deram label UK pressed in 1970 it's in great conditions with just 1 spindle mark around the center hole that I can see so EX. This is the very first pressed label for this lp. At first view all the Deram labels are the same because the only evident difference are the colours of the labels, white/red for stereo and white/brown mono and this until the 1972. Under a more careful inspection you can appreciate other details that for the collecting market are very importants and these details are the size of label can be of 10 cm or 9 cm of diameter and the vinyl catalogue number positioned on the label under the cover catalogue number on the central right position (can start with the prefix ZAL or XZAL) and can be in normal position or upside down as reflected in a mirror. Speaking of the Deram labels these are the more importants label details that may disclose you if the press it's original or not. After many years of carefuls inspections managing hundreds of deram records and dozens of copies for each titles I can say that starting from the late 1966 so from the number SML(stereo)/DML(mono) 1001 the deram label does have a label of 10 cm of diameter and the first 21 numbers does have a deep groove inside the label perimeter, then this groove disappear but the label it's still large (10 cm of diameter) 'til the number SDL/SML 1038 (East Of Eden/Mercator Projected). Alle these lps does have also the vinyl matrix number of label (zal or xzal matrix) upside down. So any title in your collection that does not have these details it's al least a second press, and this is 100% sure. After this SDL/SML number the label became smaller (9 cm of diameter) but the vinyls matrix numbers of the labels are still upside down until at least the number SML/DML 1042 (Terry Durham/Crystal Telephone).After the label it's still small but with the vinyl matrix numbers of the label in normal position and stay small until the last months of 1971 then from the last months of 1971 to the first six months of 1972 and more, it become another time larger and Deram repress also many of the 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 lps of catalogue but with the vinyl matrix number of the label in normal position and this make very difficult any collecting approach for to understand if a Deram lp it's original or not. Anyway this Snafu lp I'm auctioning it's a very RARE original press because with the small label (9 cm of diameter) with vinyl matrix number in normal position. Believe me or not but the copies with larger label (10 cm of diameter) are from 1972 and are repress much more commons on the market but they are sold as originals as this one and this is not.
cover: The cover it's 100% original and does have the classic Deram/Decca inspection hole for to see if the record it's mono or stereo, the mono does have the red edges all around the inner sleeve and the stereo the blue edges all around and this large coloured edge was visible trough this inspection hole. A later press, also 1 year latelly, does not have this inspection hole. This cover it's very well preserved and I can say it's a strong VG++ that it's a very high grade for a strict grading system. Basically does have an imperceptible trace of partial ring front and back plus some edge wear at bottom back. Spine it's fully readable but there are some short lamination creases along it.At first view a very enjoyable cover.
Vinyl: The vinyl look without marks and play very well so EX. It's a very first pressed vinyl taken from the first master because 1W it's wrote at the end of the vinyl matrix number in the dead wax zone of the vinyl and so ZAL - 9435P - 1W on the side one and ZAL 9436P - 1W on side 2. This record it's also stamped from the first Metal Mother. The metal Mother it's used to make the stampers and from the stampers are made the records. This is the Mother 1 for this lp and you can find this number at 9 o' clock around the label perimeter in the dead wax zone. This is a very hard to find press and I hope you can well understand this.
review: This is a very rare original press of the Mercator Projected second album. I personally think that the first two lps of Mercator Projected are absolutelly 2 unmissables records for any progressive collector and finding them as original press it's not so easy as you think, belive me. One thing it's a rare record and one thing it's a rare press and finding a rare press of a maybe not a so rare record, it's sometime much more hard to get of a very rare record. From the start to the finish this album include a superior musical innovation and executed with a superior technical ability. Music it's a blend of rock, jazz, psych,classic...progressive music at the end, in the full meaning of the term. The Violin of Dave Arbus it's in close up, as the electric guitar and the saxes. The rythmic section it's absolutelly fine and there's not an excellent music without this. All the misical themes are an evolution of Jazz Rock structure evolving in an eastern psychedelics dimensions that have not an equal in the music history even in a so prolific period. In any moment a refined tenses... a dynamic musical crescendo... a change of rythm or of melody. If a maximum vote must be done for some progressive records, this is one of them ... don't miss!!!
