Surfside Four

Up for grabs is a very rare single issued on the Cloister label in December 1962. This record has a full luster, shiny finish, no marks at all, I would consider this NM or probably even un-played. The labels have no tears, writing or stickers, no BB hole but please review the photos which shows the labels do have wrinkled patches on both sides; I assume that when the labels were glued down wrinkles occurred. The labels are firmly attached to the disc, no damage to be seen.
A little history: Jonathan Young (owner of Cloister) bought the rights to the single called "Jump Down" written by John Stewart and Scott Engel (which had been previously issued on Marsh records) and added vocals to it, renaming the song "Surf Fair". The session featured Jonathan Young, John Stewart, Steve Rohn and one other. Song writing, arrangement, production and publishing credits are given to John Stewart and Scott Engel (Alec Noel Prod, and published by AL-No Music BMI). The B-side, "Surfboard" which is credited to Jonathan Young is in fact another John/Scott composition and more importantly is an actual recording of John and Scott. Mr Young bought the rights from them and simply used the original master cut of the original release and renamed it. The original cut was issued on Candix Records as "The Long Trip" by The Moongooners, who are John Stewart and Scott Engel. Confused? I hope not.
Basically this single for want of simplicity is a John Stewart & Scott Engel work. This single will be of interest to collectors of Surf, Cloister and Scott Engel (Scott Walker). Scott. John and Jonathan did a lot of collaborative work before Scott found worldwide fame in The Walker Brothers.
The Surfside Four only played one gig, opening for The Beach Boys in December 1962 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium also featuring Kevin Bruce in the lineup.
