The Casio CTK-531 keyboard is a great little keyboard for the beginner or intermediate keyboard player. It is also MIDI capable, so it is a good keyboard for the person who wants to create his or her own MIDI's.
This keyboard has 61 full sized keys and a small three-inch by two and a quarter inch backlit LCD easy to view screen.
The CTK-531 comes with a pre-recorded song bank of 100 songs, of several different genres. The neat thing about the song bank is that when you play each song, a graphical representation of the keyboard shows you the notes that are being played so you can teach yourself to play along to the tune or to eventually play it yourself.
The keys can be easily set to allow you to play chords with the left hand by depressing single keys, while still letting you play the melody with the right hand. The volume control lets you set the volume of the keys, including letting you set different volumes for the cords and accompany parts of the keyboard. Right and left hand sides of the keyboard can also be turned on or off as you wish.
If you don't want to use single key chording, the keyboard can also be set to play chords normally.
You can set 99 different tones from piano to percussion for the keys, including the ability to set different tones for the left and the right hands so it can sound as if the chords are being played with one instrument while the accompaniment is played with another.
Any of 99 rhythm beats are also selectable, from rock to jazz to tango, and you can change the tempo and volume of the beats.
The back of the case has five jacks, including the power jack. The other four are for MIDI in, MIDI out (using standard five pin MIDI connections), a sustain pedal, and earphones. The jacks for the pedal and earphones, which are not included, accept standard microphone connectors.
The power supply is 9v power in, and the unit comes with a 110v to 9v adapter. Six "D" cell flashlight batteries can also power the keyboard. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the unit.
Drawbacks: The keyboard is equipped with two 6" midrange speakers. While they give passable sound, the quality could be better and isn't professional quality. The instruments that can be selected also aren't high quality, particularly with the woodwind and brass tones.
The unit also draws power rapidly, so if it is running off of batteries, the batteries must be replaced every half hour to an hour and a half.
The user's manual is fairly easy to understand, however the control setup isn't intuitive and can cause confusion when selecting and setting different modes.
Conclusion: This is a keyboard best used by beginner or intermediate keyboard players. Despite its drawbacks, this is a good all around keyboard, and I'd give it a rating of 3.5 of 5.
