There are albums that simply astound you upon first listening, they are so different, unexpected.
Perhaps for you it was Walter Carlos SWITCHED ON BACH, or Loussier jazz/classical fusion, or the first time you heard Callas or Ella do scat or Miles as he veered toward the center of the soul.
This is certainly such an album for me.
Upon its release, every audiophile magazine in the States took note of SOLAR WINDS, and this edition, the French Pressing, even resided on the TAS list for a time. It's hardly a wonder why.
David Hykes and his HARMONIC CHOIR startle you with their Tibetan-styled musings of voices mixed, ascending, collapsing, painting, massaging the air. The colors are utterly vibrant and yet at times as subdued as the fading long light of sunset. Remarkable tonalities; thrilling, really.
A combination of Hoomi singing from Mongolia and that of Tantric Buddhism, the titles themselves, of the pieces, almost capture what you will hear, but, trust me, the results are quite unexpected, in RAINBOW VOICE, MULTIPLYING VOICES AT THE HEART OF THE BODY OF SOUND, ARC DESCENTS, or GRAVITY WAVES.
The feel of it all is organic, yes, even prayerful, but its incredible ability to soothe and yet spark imagination is dumbfounding. "Musical trip" could no better be applied than to this disc, above all others I know.
A treasure, this one: In a laminated gatefold cover that is crisp and smart, without wear of any kind; the record inside is all ashine, near mint.
A very special record, that is a sonic wonder.
