Description
I don't remember when or where I bought this. I'm old enough to have bought it when it was new, but I would have been 10, and though I loved classical music then, I didn't know Also Sprach Zarathustra until the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" was released several years later. I possibly bought it then.
I'm thinning out my possessions and this album is ready for a new home. Apparently it's a collector's item. Comparing it with others that have sold, it too has the following features, which I do my best to show in the photos:
• RCA Living Stereo
• Shaded Dog logo
• 1S/1S Stampers in the "dead wax" area around the label
• an "I" stamp denoting it's an Indianapolis pressing
• comes with the original sleeve (at least, it seems original). If it is, it anticipates this 1960 album by heralding the new "1959" albums. I just don't know.
TAS (The Absolute Sound) ranks this LSC-1806 as a "Special Merit" album of all time, a category that followed its top 12.
I'm neither a collector nor a dealer, so I can't professionally (or even amateurly) rate the vinyl or the cover. I can tell you I just finished listening to a couple minutes ago. I turned it up loud, as one should, and the only pops, very minor, I hear were during the overture, which is no doubt my fault; I suspect I listened to it a bunch of times. The rest of the album, at least on my modest turntable and speakers, is quiet as a mouse. The surface, and you can see some of it from the photos (I'm not good at close up shots) is nice and clean. The grooves are sharp and there were absolutely no skips. I can see some surface, I hate to call them "scratches", but really minor.
Again, I say that as someone who knows nothing; I just come from an era when albums & 45s (and transistor radios) were are only choice.
You have photos of everything, including the album cover. It is firm all around, but with a 1.5" split beginning on one side of the opening. The colors on the front are surprisingly vibrant for a 56-year-old album; the back is mildly worn. As you can see in the picture, someone printed a "G" and wrote "J3-1099" on the back. The sleeve is splitting at the edges, though it still holds the album. The browning in the pictures is a bit worse than it really looks, and the back of the album cover is completely readable; the lamp I used washed out the type on the right side.
I will insure the album for the purchase price.
