TED TAYLOR
YOU GIVE ME NOTHING TO GO ON
Ted Taylor is a powerfully convincing singer who represents the strong influence that gospel singing has had on today's pop music. Soul, of course, is important in church music, and people like Ray Charles and Little Richard have helped introduce it to the world of rhythm and blues. Ted Taylor is another singer who brings the feeling of gospel into his singing.
Also, as this Okeh 45 proves, he is a great singer. He is both a shouter and preacher of the message, and a soft, delicate and soulful artist.
There is a reason for all this. Ted was practically born into the church, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Gospel sounds were to be found anywhere and everywhere in that area, and they soaked right into young Ted's whole being. He became leader of his own gospel-singing group, The Glory Bound Travelers, while still in high school. In fact, all the other members "Of the group went on to become ministers.
When he was nineteen, Ted moved to California and, singing with a group known as The Jacks, switched from gospel music to rhythm and blues. Soon, he began performing solo. Since then he has had great success in many in-person appearances, a success duplicated by his long string of record hits.
Northern Soul fans will find the track "You Give Me Nothing To Go On" particularly cool and it’s flipped here with “Him Instead Of Me.”
