Background -
Early Ludwig Hoelscher cello recordings on vinyl are hotly pursued by serious music collectors. This LP is a very rare Canadian made pressing issued in the early 1960s or perhaps even earlier, possibly the late 1950s. Hoelscher performances are exceedingly rare on vinyl and this is one such LP example!Ludwig Hoelscher (Solingen, August 23, 1907 - Tutzing, May 8, 1996) was a German cellist.
Hoelscher was the youngest of three children of a jeweller and amateur violinist, playing in a "family string quartet". The young Ludwig begins taking cello lessons at six years old. From the age of ten, he gained experience in chamber music, without being known as a child prodigy.
Hoelscher studied cello in Cologne, Munich, Leipzig and Berlin, with Hugo Becker, Julius Klengel and Wilhelm Lamping (1880-1951). In 1930, he received, along with Ibolyka Zilzer (1906-1971) the Mendelssohn prize for musicians. His musical career began in earnest with the meeting of pianist Elly Ney in 1932, and violinist Guillaume Stross, forming the Elly Ney Trio.
In 1936, Hoelscher made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Wilhelm Furtwängler, both of whom were life long friends.
Hoelscher was considered one of the most important artists in the National Socialist state, which earned him his enrollment in the Reich Ministry for the Education of the People and Propaganda in August 1944, published in the Gottbegnadeten-Liste ("Führerliste"), which exempted more than a thousand artists from military obligations.
On May 1, 1937, Hoelscher was a member of the NSDAP (number 5.156.776). From 1 April 1937, the 29-year-old became a professor at the Musikhochschule in Berlin. On May 29, 1938, he was soloist at the closing concert of the first Reichsmusiktage in Düsseldorf, where the exhibition "degenerate music" (Entartete Musik) took place. In the same year, Hoelscher took part in the Beethoven Days of the Hitler Youth in Wildbad and in cultural policy in the Reich Youth Work Camps ("Reichsjugendführung") in Weimar and played for the "Festival of Light" in front of the staff of four industrial enterprises. From 1938, Hoelscher was also a teacher at the Salzburg Mozarteum. For purposes of cultural propaganda, he performed in 1942, including in occupied Belgium in the itinerant concerts of the Wehrmacht, in Antwerp, Ghent, Mechelen, Louvain, Lier and Saint-Nicolas.
During the summer of 1943, he also performed in Bucharest, Lviv, Lublin and Warsaw. A few months before the end of the war, on December 2, 1944, he collaborated with the Philharmonie of the General Government in Cracow. The Governor General was Hans Frank, who for propaganda purposes had formed an orchestra, with great Polish musicians. In Frank's service diary, we find the following text: "Krakow Concert with Prof. Hoelscher".
Despite his membership in various National Socialist organizations, such as the NSDAP, the Reich Colonial League and the German Socialist National League, Ludwig Hoelscher continued his career after the Second World War. From 1954 to 1972 he was professor at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. He toured extensively all over the world, including Japan in 1953, his first visit and where he was an honorary member of Ueno-University of Tokyo. In addition to numerous other honors, he was also an honorary member of the Beethoven Haus Association in Bonn.
Ludwig Hoelscher throughout his career has been a soloist and chamber musician. He played with Elly Ney, Walter Gieseking, Hans Richter-Haaser, Wilhelm Kempff, Wilhelm Keilmann, Carl Marin, Adrian Aeschbacher, Kurt Rapf. He has recorded more than fifty works, including those by Wolfgang Fortner, Karl Hasse (1883-1960), Joseph Rheinberger, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Hans Pfitzner, Walter Gieseking, Karl Höller, Harald Genzmer, Hans Werner Henze, Ernst Krenek, Heinrich Sutermeister, Peter Jonas Korn, Günter Bialas, Wilhelm Keilmann, Casimir von Pászthory. He also recorded the first German works by Paul Hindemith.

CONDITION Details:
The LP JACKET is in excellent plus condition. The LP jacket has a 2" split along the top seam, otherwise it's nice and solid and shows only some light shelf wear along the seams and corners. Jacket has no cut out marks or hand writing, the colors are clean and clear.
The LP is in excellent overall condition. We found that the vinyl looked excellent on this early vintage LP! There are some light marks on the vinyl (spider marks mostly as the LP still has the original hard paper inner sleeve). These types of marks are caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve. They may be audible on some audio systems, but that really depends on the sensitivity of your gear. Further, very early vintage Canadian made vinyl is not generally considered of audiophile quality. Like the rare Remington's and Westminster's of their day, the vinyl is sought after for the performances, not for the sound quality. The LP retains some of the original gloss and sheen. The vinyl may have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
