It's safe to say life would have been peachy for Tom Verlaine fronted New York art-punks Television around the time this was first released. They'd just had a roaring success with their seminal debut Marquee Moon and followed it up in 1978 with this stellar second album. Whilst Marquee Moon represented what the band sounded like playing through a series of songs that they had nailed live and were really familiar with, the circumstances surrounding this album meant that they had to challenge themselves more. They ended up venturing into quieter, more reflective territory and come out with staggering results. But there are numbers that carry that intensity of Marquee Moon, such as 'Foxhole', which is a glorious slice of glam-inflected blues rock. And 'Ain't That Nothing' which veers into Jim Morrison-esque territory, carrying a potent, confident rock n' roll command, which is marvelous to behold.
