The Applejacks : The Applejacks 1K / 1K 1st Mono Press 1964

This first pressing plays with incredible 'as new' audio on both sides and that is no exaggeration.  I have played every track in full (as always) and I can confidently say there is no intrusion to be heard.  Ok one very dull quiet 'sound' at the end of one fade out but you get what I mean!  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is stunning and as for the visual quality of the vinyl, well it might be the most stunning example I have ever seen from the 60s!  This record has been so well preserved, it's like it has been hermetically sealed in a vault all of its life!  A FINAL UPGRADE archive copy for sure.

The laminated cover is in lovely condition with minimal wear.  It's not far off Near Mint- but I have graded it as Ex+ just to be a little cautious.  The original Foreign patents pending inner sleeve is in excellent condition also.

A couple of interesting facts about The Applejacks - their bass player was female, a rarity in those days, and their second single 'Like Dreamers Do' was written by Paul McCartney in 1959 but is credited to Lennon & McCartney.  It is not on this album unfortunately.  However, it was performed by The Beatles, featuring Pete Best, at their unsuccessful 1st Jan 1962 audition for Decca Records!

As you can see this first pressing was one of the first of the production line with a B stamper on both sides, the first of Decca's BUCKINGHAM system.

Visual description

The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has a lovely glossy sheen with no scratches.  Under a bright light I can only locate a handful of ultra faint hairlines and even they were difficult to find!  There are a couple of tiny blemishes on the final track of S1 but you can only see them if you hold the vinyl at a certain angle.  There is another small blemish at the end of S2 but again it is very faint and obviously they have no impact on the audio.  There is no groove or surface wear, no 'bag-rash' and the run out grooves are very clean also.  The KT tax stamp can clearly be seen on the S1 run off.  The grooved red Decca labels are super clean with no marking and only minimal spindle wear.

Play grading

The run in on S1 is very clean and their one big hit 'Tell Me When' then plays with remarkable clarity and definition.  From start to finish there is no background and it quite simply plays 'as new' including the fade out.  In a way it's not surprising as the vinyl is in pristine condition as stated and it has that familiar warmth and depth symptomatic with mono records from that era.  A Mint version for sure.

'Wishing Will Never Make It So' is of the same high end standard with no intrusion.  Again the clarity of sound is stunning and there are no ticks, clicks, pops or background static.  There are 3/4 very quiet dull 'sound' in the dead wax and one of them just catches the tail end of the fade out so I will say Mint- :-)

No issues with 'Over Suzanne' which plays with sublime precision, not even a solitary dust tick.  Mint

The more upbeat 'Hello Josephine' plays with great power and depth and again... there is no intrusion.  Incredible really when you think this vinyl is nearly 62 years old!  It just shows how well a record can play regardless of age if it has always been very carefully looked after.  Exceptional clarity once more and no distortion on the top end.  A strange ending if ever there was one!  Mint

'As A Matter Of Fact' again impresses on every level.  No need to elaborate.  Mint

The Chuck Berry number 'Too Much Monkey Business' plays with impeccable quality throughout.  Just a hint of inner groove distortion on the vocal perhaps but it's so so minimal and hardly worthy of mention.  This is vinyl you expect it!  And it still deserves a Mint- grade.

The penultimate track 'Memories Of You' plays with superb audio and needless to say there is no intrusion.  None.  Mint

The quiet opening vocal on 'Ain't That Just Like Me' plays perfectly and as it get's into its stride the audio is strong and clear with only the bare minimum of inner groove distortion, nothing intrusive of course.  This is a mono record being played through a stereo set up and yet sonically it is still so impressive.  The instrumental section for example sounds fantastic!  Mint- is again an honest appraisal of the audio.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'Kansas City' plays to perfection, they really were very strong musicians!  The opening vocal section is 'as new' also and it continues in the same precise way.  Sonically this is stunning in every single way and Mint is an easy grade to give.

The more laid back 'I Wonder' plays beautifully and without any background.  Seriously is there going to be any interference on this album?  I suspect not!  Mint

Their third single 'Three Little Words' again defies the laws of nature!  It plays with phenomenal audio throughout... with no sign of any background.  Mint

'Baby Jane' is strong and powerful and the depth on the audio is superb.  Can't fault the clarity either.  Mint

The intro on 'No Time' plays perfectly and the opening vocal is equal to that.  This is one of the strongest tracks on the album in my opinion and from the first note to the last it plays with stunning clarity, warmth and definition.  Mint

'See If She Cares' is more or less perfect with only a hint of vocal distortion albeit very minor and again I am probably being too harsh in my 'description'.  A couple of minor statics on the fade out.  Mint-

'What's The Matter Little Girl' plays with STUNNING quality from start to finish.  The depth and resonance of the audio is second to none and of course there is no intrusion.  The 'echo' affect is very much in evidence on this track as it is on every track really!  Mint

The long opening instrumental on 'What'd I Say' plays with such strong, clear audio and the first vocal is just as impressive.  It continues to play with real quality for a final track, the audio is so clean and distinct.  There is barely any inner groove distortion which is rare for any mono record from this era and especially for one that is so powerful.  It has to be the longest track on the album and every section plays with genuine quality.  A Mint- conclusion.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in superb condition with minimal wear and certainly nothing obvious.  The top edge is perfect and the bottom edge is close to that with only 3/4 small 'rubs'.  The thin spine is also extremely clean with barely any wear and the corners have no real wear either.  The opening edge has barely any handling wear and the laminated front cover is visually stunning with just one very small faint crease near the top edge and a handful of minor laminate creases next to the spine as is common.  A tiny corner crease bottom left also.  The back cover is so clean when you consider it is not laminated.  It has only minimal ringwear and very little marking.  One small faint mark in the bottom left corner is the worst!  This truly is a fantastic example of this cover and I would not be surprised if it was the best in existence today!

The original poly-lined inner sleeve is very clean also and has no side splits and only minimal wear in the top corners.  Some light creasing but nothing major.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
