THE BARBARIANS – HEY LITTLE BIRD / YOU’VE GOT TO UNDERSTAND (JOY 45M-290) (VG/VG-)

From Provincetown MA, this was their very first single, recorded only a few months after they formed the band in 1964.  This 45 certainly deserves consideration for being one of the very first true “Garage” records, based on its thundering fuzz bass, extra snotty vocals from Moulty, and the early recording date of September 1964.  It’s pretty amazing that they were invited to play Hey Little Bird on the TAMI T.V. show, alongside The Rolling Stones, James Brown & The Beach Boys!  They had a whirlwind year as a result of that performance and recorded five more singles and a full LP in 1965. But by 1966 the group’s flame has fizzled and they disbanded. This copy isn’t in the greatest shape, but plays a bit better than it looks, graded as VG/VG-.  There is also some noticeable distortion from groove wear, but it doesn’t really take away from the overall listening experience. One side of the label has a small sticker. Check out the scans and audio samples.

GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
