John Lennon once noted that the emotional stress of the Beatles' years in the mid-'60s could be glimpsed in his lyrics; after all, he had titled one of his major songs "Help!" Much the same thing could be said about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, one of whose major songs was called "Help Me, Rhonda." The second biggest hit of the group's career (after "I Get Around"), "Help Me, Rhonda" came at a time of amazing creativity and overwhelming psychological turmoil for Wilson. the Beach Boys' songwriter and producer as well as a singer and bass player, Wilson was trying to come up with enough material to fill three albums and four singles per year, material good enough to compete with the Beatles, all while undertaking grueling tours with the group. Though best known as a composer, not a lyricist, by mid-1964, Wilson often was writing his songs alone, and his lyrics could be revealing -- the boastful "I Get Around" and the apprehensive "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)," both 1964 singles, said a lot about the pressures he was feeling. In December 1964, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown and stopped touring with the Beach Boys, but the relentless schedule of record releases did not let up. In fact, Wilson was in the midst of recording the album The Beach Boys Today, which would be released in March 1965. "Help Me, Rhonda" was a track from that album in which Beach Boy Al Jardine, taking a rare lead vocal, pleaded with the title character to assist him on the rebound from another girl. The recording had a rough charm and a playful production, in which Wilson experimented with the volume of individual tracks, fading the backup vocals and then bringing them up again in the mix.

Perhaps feeling less than inspired in the wake of his breakdown, Wilson cut Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance?" as the Beach Boys' next single in early 1965, as a follow-up to his and his brother Carl's composition "Dance, Dance, Dance," which had been a Top Ten hit in the fall of 1964. "Do You Wanna Dance?" made the Top 20, but it had a short chart life, necessitating the release of another single quickly. The well may still have been dry because Wilson rushed the Beach Boys into the studio in March 1965 to re-record "Help Me, Rhonda" in a faster, tighter arrangement that cut 22 seconds off the LP version, eliminated those volume experiments, and dropped other unusual touches such as the prominent harmonica in favor of a more rocking approach with an electric guitar solo. Also, a minor lyric change sharpened the song's tone: The plans that had been "ruined" in the first version were now "shattered," a more extreme image.

The result was a smash. the Beach Boys recorded "Help Me, Rhonda" a third time for their 1973 album The Beach Boys in Concert, and Johnny Rivers revived it for a Top 40 hit in 1975 with Brian Wilson on backup vocals. It remains one of the best examples of Wilson's ability to turn the turmoil of his life into stirring music. (Oddly enough, it is the original LP version, not the single version, that turns up most frequently on compilations, a good example being the chart-topping 1974 album Endless Summer. Even the 1995 single-disc album 20 Good Vibrations -- The Greatest Hits uses the LP version. But, in 1999, 20 Good Vibrations -- The Greatest Hits was expanded into two separate volumes, and the first volume contains the single version of "Help Me, Rhonda" in the mono mix heard on the single.)

It's worth noting that Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love claimed to have participated more in the songwriting of Beach Boys songs than he was given credit for and eventually brought suit to correct this. Since 1996, "Help Me, Rhonda" has been credited to Mike Love and Brian Wilson.

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
