The Beatles / 1962 - 1966 'The Red Album' 2LP 2nd Press 1978 w/Sticker

This second pressing is in fantastic condition and plays to a standard that you so rarely find today.  There is only one very light click on S4 and there is no background static on any of the sides.  The clarity and depth of the audio is just STUNNING!

Pressed on iridescent red vinyl the records are immaculate and 'as new' is an honest description, visually I have never seen better.  I suspect this album was purchased as a collectors item and in my opinion has only been played once or twice at most.  I can only see one tiny and barely visible spindle trace on the S2 label.

The laminated gatefold is also in beautiful condition and for once still has the original sticker on the front.  The cover has retained its original shape and 'look' so well and has clearly hardly ever been handled.  The red lyric inners are also in immaculate condition with no side splits etc.

This pressing was cut by Harry T Moss who of course is known as one of the finest mastering/cutting engineers of his day.  HTM is etched into three of the four run out grooves.  His 'records' are always known to have a greater sonic quality and this one is no exception!

Both vinyls are as 'clean' as the day when they came off the 'press' and retain an immaculate glossy sheen!  There are no marks or scratches and I cannot detect any hairlines either with grooves are so clean.  As stated I could only find one mega small spindle trace on the S2 label and the labels themselves are in pristine condition with no marking or writing.  Visually it doesn't get any better than this!

Play grading  

S1 plays like it has never been played before!  The clarity and depth of the audio certainly suggests that - from 'Love Me Do' to 'Can't Buy Me Love' the playback cannot be faulted.  There are no ticks, clicks or pops and there is no background static either.  A Mint side for sure and as always I have played every track in full so as to provide a 'complete' grading.  A little inner groove distortion on the final track but that is to be expected. 

The opening track on S2 'A Hard Day's Night' carries on this fine form and plays with perfect precision from the first note to the last.  The quiet track 'And I Love Her' is just as good with a clarity that is absolutely STUNNING!  The remaining tracks are of the highest standard and the classic 'Yesterday' ends the side with incredible audio also.  So far this album is certainly delivering and this is another Mint side.

S3 is of the same 'high end' standard with no interference from start to finish.  So many highlights they are too numerous to mention!  However, 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away', 'We Can Work It out' and the final track 'Norwegian Wood' are particularly impressive but then the entire side can be described 'as new' if I'm honest.  Mint

S4 begins with a superb rendition of 'Nowhere Man' although there is (shock!) one light click at the end of the second verse.  It is only minor and not intrusive and the rest of the side plays with imperious quality.  'Michelle' plays beautifully with only a small number of barely audible dust ticks and 'In My Life' is close to perfect with only a couple of very light ticks.   So many classics on this side and the final three again play 'as new' with no intrusion.

In summary this very collectable double album plays with a sonic quality that is easily on a par with an un-played record.  Aside from one light click on S4 the clarity and definition of the audio cannot be faulted and this is album that has been so incredibly well preserved down the years.  The cover and lyric inners are also in superb condition - a stunning album in every way.

The Gatefold & Red Lyric Inners

This laminated G & L cover is near perfect with barely any wear.  As can be seen it has the all important sticker in the top right corner which remains in perfect Mint condition.  The edges and wide spine have no wear and the corners are also super clean - in fact the only 'wear' is one small crease top left which you can also see on the reverse side but it is so minor and certainly not what I call obvious shelf wear.  The opening edges have no handling wear and there is only one very small indent on the opening edge of the front cover.  Both the front and back cover are in lovely condition with no marking and only a couple of tiny laminate creases.  The inside of the gatefold is near perfect with only a couple of small 'specks' at the foot of the inner spine.  Overall this is a stunning example of this cover.

The red lyric inners with the rounded corners are in beautiful condition with no side splits or tears and no marking - just one barely visible corner crease on the second one that is all.  Practically 'as new' really!

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
