This first mono pressing has the 4N/4N matrix whereas the earliest is 3N/3N. They were produced at the same time and this is known as a crossover first pressing. All aspects of the label show this also. Note the single stamper T on S1 denoting it as one of the earliest pressings on the 4N/4N run.
Mono 4N/4N first pressing on Yellow/Black label. 'The Parlophone Co. Ltd' etc printed around the perimeter edge. 'Recording first published 1964' and 'Sold in U.K. subject to resale price conditions'.

Visual grading
This vinyl has been extremely well preserved down the years and remains in great condition with a lovely glossy sheen. There are no scratches and only a few minor sleeve removal hairlines. At nearly 54 years it is incredibly clean as are the run out grooves - the matrix numbers stand proud.
Play grading
'No Reply' has a superb deep rich quality to the sound and there is no crackle and no clicks or pops at all. There is just minimal amount of static here and there but it is so much in the background and does not interfere with the quality of the audio. The music really does play so clearly and provides a fantastic start to S1. 'I'm A Loser' plays with the same clarity and again not a single click or pop, just a little static on the fade out. So far the separation is first class i.e. the clarity of every instrument including the vocal is as good as it could be. 'Baby's In Black' continues this fine form and again has no 'background'. There is a little static hiss on the dead wax between every track but this is definitely not heard during the music. 'Rock And Roll Music' plays very impressively for a louder track when you would perhaps expect some distortion - there is none here. A superb version that plays practically as well as the say when first released. 'I'll Follow The Sun' again has no obvious interference although there is a minor amount of intermittent static but it is in the background and largely non-intrusive. 'Mr Moonlight' has a little more static but it certainly cannot be described as crackle. It is just a gentle static sound in the background and again no clicks or pops. 'Kansas City' ends the side with very clear audio considering it is the 'final track' that are so often beset with sound issues. There is no barely any distortion, impressive for a louder track, and only a little static in the background. The long fade out plays very clearly with only minor static right at the end. This is a very impressive version.
With barely any static on the intro 'Eight Days A Week' plays with stunning clarity and depth from beginning to end. There is no interference and this really is a 'high end' version, absolutely superb! 'Words Of Love' and 'Honey Don't' are of the same standard and the depth and richness of the sound is so impressive for a vinyl from 1964. There is no crackle and needless to say no clicks or pops. This is audio as it is meant to be heard! These three tracks grade as Near Mint in my opinion. There is a little static hiss between each track but less so than on S1. 'Every Little Thing' plays with a wonderful strong bass sound and only a very minor amount of background static. The remaining tracks do not disappoint and play with sublime clarity again. A minor hint of background static but I am perhaps being overly critical. There is nothing that interferes with the music and what is so impressive is that there is no distortion on the top end. 'Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby' has a little more background static but it is not crackle and still plays extremely well. A great end to the album.
In summary this crossover first pressing plays with such clear audio it's amazing to think it's nearly 54 years old! How many vinyls of this age have no clicks, no pops and no crackle? Yes there is a very minor amount of background static and a little hiss between tracks but overall the audio plays to a fantastic standard with great clarity and depth, no muddiness to the sound at all. It also has one of the cleanest gatefolds I have seen in a long time.
The Cover
This G & L laminated gatefold is in excellent condition and one of the cleanest I have seen in a long time. So many of these have a fair degree of wear but this one has been very well cared for down the years. The edges have very little rubbing and the spine has only a little rubbing on the top and bottom and remains 100% legible. The corners of the spine also have a little creasing and the right hand corners have only very minor wear. The laminate on the front and back has no splits, just a couple of areas of lifting next to the spine and some very small creases on the back. The flipbacks on the inside of the gatefold are very clean with no marking and the top and bottom of the spine has hardly any wear. Some light fading on the left hand side but overall this is a very acceptable cover and has none of the tears or marking that is regularly found.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined Emitex sleeve has no splits or tears just some creasing here and there and some light age related fading.
The labels
There is some spotting on the yellow/black Parlophone labels, mainly on the S2 one but apart from that there is no other marking or writing. There is some spindle wear but not a great deal. There is no KT tax stamp on either label.
