Label/Format: Parlophone with matt, very gently textured surfaces. Side two has the ‘K T’ embossed tax codes, both letters are immaculate, totally unrubbed or worn. These meet the criteria for a ‘first pressing’ with the ‘The Parlophone Co Ltd’ rim text (soon changed to ‘Gramophone’), also the ‘Record First Published 1964’ and ‘Sold in UK subject to resale price Conditions, see price lists’.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. An exceptional pair meeting this criteria and the record plays superbly with beautiful clean surfaces.

Rarity: Few Beatles standard issues are ‘rare’, but early stereo copies are scarcer. Condition is the paramount factor with high percentages of albums played many, many times, often on the most basic of record players and worn out. Hardly played early albums are much harder to find with clean, little worn covers.

Brief Info: The Fab Fours fourth album and like those that went before (and after) it sold in vast numbers. However, the majority of early issues were sold in the mono format with few fans and collectors owning stereo equipment at this time. Most will know the album well enough, this is a lovely example, clearly hardly played and one of the very best ‘For Sales’ I have seen in years.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better for a flimsy gatefold this considerable age. The front and back are laminated, the inside is matt and smooth and has two flipbacks on the right top and bottom. The front face is single thickness card and entry for the record is in the back via the centrefold. All makes for a fragile and damage-prone cover. This has the outline ‘stereo’ mode on the front. Printed and made in England, uncredited. The tracing paper lined ‘Use EMITEX’ text inner sleeve is included.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both front and back are very impressive and do actually come quite close to reminding of as-issued. The super-delicate single thickness card front is superb with minimal creasing apart from a small few on the spine edge, any others are mere traces, the back is largely the same. Very prone to lifting, the front has little – a smallish one on the bottom corner – little else on that sides – the back has four on the spine and these again only quite small. The back left has some mottle affect where the laminate has not quite adhered as well as the rest, that a common trait on covers and totally natural as-issued. Superb shine is retained by the front especially and the famous graphic looks sublime. A little darkening on the top front edge is hte only gentle clue of ageing being honest and clearly this has been generally carefully and lightly handled over the considerable number of years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, even the central record entrance area is solidly and intact (for a change), the merest trace of wear to the top spine area being ultra critical, no tears, all fully intact and very neat indeed. Both flipbacks undamaged, solid and crisp as-seen. Few of these surface without often disastrous splits and damage making this quite exceptional.

Top Edges: The back laminated folded edge is straight and immaculate. The front single thickness card shows minimal thickening and still lays quite flat.

Bottom Edges: As above, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back closed edge again neat and impressive, the front sharp and unthickened. Only very gentle curl to the very ends being very critical again, still almost as flat as they are likely to get.

Spine and Text: Clearly a flimsy, delicate and fragile spine, but still quite solid, straight with minimal compression (a trace at the top) and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Slight tilt only, but no crushing. A couple of fine surface cracks only with the unaffected and unworn as seen. No laminate peeling either.

Corners: Any tip rubs, wear or creasing tiny and light, excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks. Again few will have less wear these days.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: arguably better with only light discolouration and faint minimal tone spotting. Again, given the great age, this has survived well with all edges naturally intact. This has the original tracing paper style lining which is immaculate as seen through two pristine window circles. Very little creasing at all, just politely aged, as seen, it has the USE ‘EMITEX’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+)/(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as mostly seen critically under bright light. Side two is close to immaculate with barely anything seen. Most of any blemishes on side one are purely within the pressing and totally superficial, nothing to do with wear or style marks as all. Remember, these records were quickly manufactured, almost mass-produced at first, so the odd pressing blemish is hardly a surprise. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: These vintage Beatles originals are a thing of genuine beauty when seen and heard as such. This classic more rock orientated early album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free beautiful stereo sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early ‘first’ pressing (format copy) I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
