Actually this is the Beatles' "greatest" from the standpoint of mid-1965, when the powers-that-were at EMI's German-based Odeon imprint decided that they needed a compilation of the Beatles' hits (could they have been too impatient to wait for Christmas?). Issued in June of 1965, this generous 16-song LP covers their best-known singles (many heard in stereo for the first time, for those teenagers lucky enough to have stereo phonographs) plus some album tracks of the period, from "Please Please Me" up thru "Ticket to Ride." To modern listeners, it's a lot like the first LP of the "1962-66" compilation. Of course, any collection of the kind of quality represented here by any other group of the era would easily get five stars without any explanations needed; but as is obvious, subsequent recordings made much of what's here seem a bit less imposing (if not less enjoyable) than it did at the time. But this is still a very solid collection of obvious highlights from the group's first wave of success.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-        Cover has some tiny, faint, barely visible writing on its back side (tiny check marks in blue ballpoint pen next to the track listing on the side 2; this being a laminated cover, we suspect that these can be neatly wiped off with a soft cloth soaked with ethyl alcohol, but did not attempt to)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)
