Description

THE BEATLES Help UK Black/Yellow Parlophone MONO FIRST SOLID EX PLUS VINYL Beat

The Beatles, Help.

Original 1965 UK pressed Parlophone Records mono LP, PMC 1255.

"Gramophone Co" etc in upper case to perimeter and "Sold in UK" text.

KT tax code embossed to A side label.

Very early XEX 549-2 / XEX 550-2 matrix numbers, A 1 / R 1 mothers/stampers.

An unusually clean and well preserved issue. Vinyl is visually a strong EX plus. The overall appearance is very solid. The labels still have a very bright and undulled gloss with just a few visible light spider trail marks around the spindle areas. (Note that the yellow print to the labels is very sharp and well-defined, but has bleached somewhat in the photos). Playing surfaces are bright and glossy still. There are no immediately obvious marks. Close inspection with a magnifying glass reveals just a very few light and superficial wispy hairline scuffs. There are no deep marks or scratches.

Playback is very clean throughout. Noticeably the run-ins and band separators are free of noise. The surfaces are quiet and there is no crackle, nor any ticks or clicks. Throughout playback I noticed perhaps two or three soft, isolated and inconsequential dust crackles. When I acquire an LP as clean as this, I generally play test without cleaning, and naturally a few dust specks were present (some may be visible in the photo). I generally prefer to leave any further attempts at dust removal to the buyer.

Inner sleeve is a poly-lined Emitex which is mostly in sound condition. Clean and bright, and without browning. No annotations or marks bar a couple of very tiny tan dots of stains to the visible poly at centre areas. Some diagonal corner creasing and a couple of vertical creases along the left hand edge. No seam splits.

Exterior sleeve also unusually well preserved and would probably grade a fairly comfortable EX bar a small and neat penned inscription to rear panel (see photo). Else the laminated front panel is very bright and clean, and if anything brighter than the photo suggests. Note that there is a mispressing in the laminate coating which leaves a small band uncovered at the far right of the sleeve. The uncovered area has remained very clean however. Just a very few minor hairline and half moon imperfections including a couple of tiny pinch line creases leading in from spine area. This is to an absolute minimum however, and far less than usually seen with this sleeve. When rotating the sleeve beneath a light source the merest hint of a ringwear impression is noticeable to the front. This really is minimal and the sleeve has to be moved around a bit before this is even noticeable. The rear panel has retained a very solid white appearance with just a fraction of natural age/handling/storage toning, again this is minimal and unobtrusive. Else condition of the rear panel is fairly self-evident from the photo. Aside from the mentioned inscription there are no other marks of note, no sticker, pen etc. marks. Backflaps are in good order and undamaged. Edges/spine area have survived very well, and the spine is in particularly good condition. Still square and trus and not bashed or pinched. Tips are all square and true with just specks of whitening rubbing. The entry side is not feathered but has a few very minor dings and a couple of the very minutest of closed tears. These are really fractional. Note that in the photo highlighting the spine condition, the entry side appears somewhat wavy. There is a VERY gentle undulation here, partly due to the laminate shortfall, but this is nowhere near as pronounced as the photo may suggest, and by and large the entire sleeve still sits very flat and true.

On the whole a superb issue. Whilst not an overly rare album, very few surviving copies must remain as clean as this one is.
