THE BEATLES
PLEASE PLEASE ME
1963 4th Stereo Pressing
Matrices 1N/ 1N
Sleeve:
This is a Gold Stereo sleeve i.e.correct alignment of the Angus McBean photo credit offset to the right edge starting under the last ‘s’ of songs. These sleeves are incredibly rare, as they are reserved for the 1st and 2nd black and gold pressings, and usually the 3rd pressings.
It grades as Very Good Plus. There are no splits, or rips, or repairs. The front panel retains tight laminate with a few crease lines emanating from the top and bottom edge. The top edge is completely smooth all the way along with no chipping. The spine too is completely intact with bold title text. There are a couple of tiny dings in the laminate on the spine edge but hasn’t gone through the card. The bottom edge too is largely smooth but has three our four scuffs along it, and shelf wear on its corner edges. The photo of the Fab Four at EMI house retains its colour and contrast, and still gleams.
The rear panel is still very clean white, with no discolouration and with unfaded black bold text. The fold-overs are completely intact and still well adhered to the card. The top and bottom fold-over’s have a few minor dings in the laminate, and a little light flaking on the tip of their edges in places.
This is a very neat example with no writing or writing imprints, or any other kinds of marks.
Inner Sleeve: Original EMI poly-lined inner sleeve, tough card material with ‘Made In Great Britain’ text. It is completely intact and has is still clear white with little discolouration.
Vinyl: The vinyl grades as a strong Excellent to Excellent Plus on both sides. There are no scratches, scuffs, warps, dinks, needle drops, discernible hairlines, or any indeed any detractions to the bright jet black pressing sheen which is prevalent all over. There is very little evidence of use, and in normal daylight it looks flawless. There are some ultra feint lines on either visible when studied under a bright light with the disc held just under eye level - and look to be from sleeve removal rather than actual marks made by a stylus. The indication being that the disc has received very minimal play use. Very clean surfaces with no groove wear. It is a heavy slab of vinyl that lies completely flat on the turntable and is in fantastic condition.
The Labels: There are absolutely no spindle line traces on either side. Side 2 exhibits a little wear around the spindle point perimeter but the early MT tax code is still bold with very little wear. The black base and yellow Parlophone logo is still vibrant.
The Audio: This is an audiophile copy. The vocals and instrumentals are as crisp and clear and lucid from start to finish on both sides as they always were. Uninterrupted by any detractions to the original audio other than a few barely discernible low level static type tics in a just a few of the run-in’s and fade-out’s and linking grooves. It is completely free of background crackling and dust pops or any other unwanted noise. The stereo channeling is perfect and undistorted with a strong punchy original beat all of the way through.
Extremely early mother & stampers
Side 1: 1 P
Side 2: 1 G
These particular mother and stamper codes are normally to be found on the 3rd pressings with the small 33 and a third on the labels. It just shows how quickly the labels went through the changes having been pressed by the same stampers as some of the 3rd pressings. It is collectible from that point of view alone, regardless of the fact that this is great looking LP with superb audio. It can be deduced from these codes that this record would have been at the very most within the first 1800 off the pressing machine!
