The Beatles - Please Please Me
(Parlophone PMC 1202 UK Mono LP 1963)
This is an original 1963 UK "Black and Gold" Parlophone Mono LP pressing. It has a heavyweight front laminated flipback sleeve which has a large sized "Mono" on the front. The sleeve is printed by "E.J. Day". This sleeve is the very earliest UK sleeve variation. The "Angus McBean" text credit, in the bottom right corner area of the front sleeve, starts immediately after the "s" of "Songs" (see photo). All UK "Black & Gold" Parlophone pressing sleeves have the "Angus McBean" credit in this position. This changed to a slightly different position on the "black & yellow" pressings sometime later in 1963. It comes with its original generic polythene-lined company "Emitex" paper inner sleeve.
The record is pressed on thick vinyl & has Black & Gold "Parlophone" labels. These have "The Parlophone Co. Ltd.." text around the bottom perimeter. There is an embossed "MT" company tax code around the spindle hole on Side 2's label. The matrix numbers (& mother stampers) are as follows:
Side 1: XEX 421-1N (GP 1)
Side 2: XEX 422-1N (GH 1)
( 2)
The matrix numbers and mother stampers are machine stamped in the dead wax on both sides. There is a "2" stamped underneath the "1" mother stamper in the dead wax on Side 2.
Side 1 has the "Northern Songs" credit for "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Misery". The tracks "Ask Me Why" and "Please Please Me", on Side 1, have the "Dick James Mus. Co." credit.
Side 2 has the "Ardmore & Beechwood" credit for "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You". Side 2 has the "Dick James Mus. Co." credit for the "Do You Want To Know A Secret" and "There;s A Place".
This is a genuine 1963 Black & Gold UK Original Mono pressing. As stated, it has the earliest UK sleeve variation which has the "Angus McBean" credit in a slightly different position to "black & yellow" UK sleeves. UK original black & gold pressings of this LP are highly prized. They really do not turn up that often in the UK. They were essentially only available to buy for a few short months from this LP's release in March 1963, until Parlophone changed their label design a few months later in 1963. This would be to the more familiar "Black & Yellow" Parlophone label design. They kept this label design for the remainder of the 1960's.
I have some other rare & collectible UK original "Beatles" records. This includes the red Parlophone 7" Singles of "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me". I also have a rare UK Stereo 1st pressing of "A Hard Day's Night", and a rare UK Mono 1st Press of the "Yellow Submarine" LP. So please see my other items. Don't miss out!
Sleeve: There is moderate to more considerable rubbing wear to the top corner tip at the spine. This has caused a 2 cm crease & tear to the top flipback at the spine area. It is mainly just the front laminate & paper coating that has peeled slightly in that area. There is moderate to more considerable rubbing wear to the bottom corner tip area at the sleeve opening. This has caused an extremely small 0.6 cm seam split at the bottom edge from the sleeve opening. There is mild or very mild rubbing wear to the other two corner tips. There is light, mild or very mild rubbing wear on the sleeve opening edges on some areas. This is not too noticeable.
There is some light, mild, very mild or very minor finger tip staining & foxing on some areas on the rear sleeve. There is some light or very mild fading to the white of the rear sleeve too. There is a very small fingernail sized tear on the bottom flipback. This doesn't notice that much. There is a small area of light, mild or very mild creases on the rear sleeve. Just above the bottom flipback. Again, this is not too noticeable.
There are about 6 small & light horizontal creases at the spine area. These measure from 1 cm to 1.5 cm in length. The spine is in very nice condition. There is a tiny crease mark on the spine face. This is quite near the top. There are about 7 light or very mild vertical laminate creases along the bottom edge of the front sleeve. These measure from approximately 1 cm to 3 cm in length. There is some light, mild or very mild ringwear on some areas. This 1st UK sleeve variation is notoriously difficult to find in great shape. This copy on not too bad. Overall, Very Good condition.
Vinyl: There is a very mild 5 cm hairline surface mark on Side 1. There is a light 5 cm surface rub mark nearby this on Side 1. There are about 7 other light, mild or very mild hairline surface marks, or surface rub marks, on Side 1. These measure from 1 cm to 3 cm in length. Some of these are very feint and can hardly be seen under a strong light.
There is a very mild 3.5 cm hairline surface mark on Side 2. There is a light 5 cm hairline surface rub mark on Side 2 too. There are about 7 other light, mild or very mild hairline surface marks, or surface rub marks, on Side 2. These are all quite small & measure from 1 cm to 2 cm in length. Some of these are very feint and can hardly be seen under a strong light.
Otherwise, there are some light, mild, very mild or more moderate surface sleeve rubs which can be seen under a strong light. There are a few areas of moderate surface sleeve rubs, or surface rub marks, which, again, can only be seen under a strong light. The original Emitex inner sleeve, over time, has left some light, mild, very mild or very minor dull surface marks on some areas. These can only be seen under a strong light. Overall, Good++ condition. This copy is quite well played, but it is not trashed.
The Black & Gold labels are in Excellent condition and show light or very mild spindle wear only. They are really nice & clean!
The original polythene-lined "Emitex" company inner sleeve is in Very Good++ condition. It shows light, mild or very mild ringwear & fading. There are no seam splits.
I have play tested this LP in its entirety. Side 1: plays Good+ to Very Good overall and Very Good+ in some places. There is some light, mild, very mild or very minor crackle noticeable in some quieter places. There are a very few areas of more moderate crackle on Side 1 too. This never lasts too long. The music still shines through!
Side 2: plays Very Good to Very Good+ overall. There is some light, mild, very mild or very minor crackle noticeable in some quieter places. There are no nasty clicks or pops. There are certainly no jumps or skips. Overall, a very serviceable audio copy.
Traceable insurance is already included in the stated P&P price for this listing.
Discount is given on P&P for multiple purchases. I shall always weigh combined purchases to get a completely accurate price. So please wait for the invoice to be sent before paying. Please see below for a more detailed description.
MINT Condition = This is as perfect a copy as you are likely to find. The cover will show no, or next to no, wear. The vinyl will be unplayed or very, very near unplayed.
NEAR MINT Condition = Nearly mint, just slightly under. There maybe some minor paper/ inner sleeve rubs that can barely be seen under strong light. This disc has been played only a few times & has been extremely well cared for. The cover is nearly perfect - Very minimal wear only.
EXCELLENT Condition = An excellent copy will show only mild, or minor, signs of use. There will be light, or very mild, sleeve rubs that can hardly be seen under strong light. There may be a very small & minor hairline mark in some instances. Play, in most cases, will be excellent or better. There may be some light, or very light, crackle in a few quieter places. The sleeve will show mild, or minor, rubbing wear & ringwear only.
NEAR EXCELLENT Condition = This has been played a few more times but it has been well cared for. There will be mild sleeve rubs which can be seen under a strong light. There may be a couple of minor, or light, hairline marks. Playback will be generally excellent or better. There may be some light, mild or very mild crackle in some quieter places. The cover will show mild rubbing wear, ringwear or creasing
Very Good Condition = Most records that have been quite well played, but reasonably well cared for, tend to fit into this category. This is probably the most varied of the gradings so I have elaborated below.
There may be mild to more moderate sleeve rubs which can only be seen under a strong light. There may be a few light hairline marks but nothing too bad. A quite well played but serviceable copy. Playback will be very agreeable overall. There will be light, mild or very mild crackle in some places. There may also be a few light clicks. A more thorough description will always be on the listing. The record will certainly not be trashed!
The cover will show more noticeable signs of storage or use. There will be mild to more moderate rubbing wear on some edges There could be fading, ringwear or a minor seam split. There could be some mild creasing or mild sticker tears.
Please note that I also use "+" or "-" symbols for this grading. A plus symbol is obviously at the top end of "Very Good" & is really not too far from being in "Near Excellent" condition. The minus symbol obviously means it is at the lower end. This will mean that it is near to being in "Good+" condition.
>> Postage Rates
AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT TO YOU VERY SOON AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS. PLEASE WAIT FOR THIS BEFORE PAYING.
Royal Mail have very recently increased their postage rates. So I have revised my postage costs to reflect their increases. (Please note that these prices include packaging costs too)
Double LPs are classed as two LPs. Also gatefold sleeves, posters, inserts, etc.. can increase postage costs. One parcel must not exceed 2kg (approximately 4-6 LP's).
Please note that there are now VAT import charges from the UK into all EU countries. Anything under 150 Euros will need an IOSS number. VAT is paid at point of sale. For any items over 150 Euros in value. There will be a customs charge too. These vary, I believe, from country to country. Please check your relevant postal service online for details. Please note that these charges are beyond my control and are now the law for outside parcels going into the EU.
All records will be sent in high quality vinyl mailers with at least two card stiffeners either side of the LP or 7" Single. I use a cruciform box for larger orders (3-6 LPs). All parcels will be marked "Fragile" and dispatch time will generally be between 1-3 days after payment.
I will also remove the vinyl from the sleeve & place them in a re-sealable polythene sleeve. In order to prevent seam splits. Depending on the inner sleeve; I often remove the vinyl from the inner sleeve & place it in a separate plain paper, or polythene-lined, plain inner sleeve. I am very conscientious and careful when packaging your LP(s).
I consider my postage & packaging costs to be very transparent & very fair. Packaging costs will generally be between £0.80 to £1.50. I am not adding any further costs for handling, etc...
If you are uncertain about any of the above, or just simply want some information regarding any item, please do not hesitate to contact me. I welcome any questions.
Remember to check out My Other Items Lots of rare & quality vinyl! Most are UK 1st Pressings. It is quite likely that there will be more records by this artist, or records in a similar vein.
