The Beatles : Revolver 2/3 2nd Mono Press 1966
This second mono pressing plays with incredible audio on both sides and I have only marked down 'She Said She Said', the final track on S1, as Near Mint because it has a minimal amount of inner groove distortion but... this is very very minimal! The other tracks play with STUNNING quality with a clarity, depth and power that is second to none. As detailed below it may well be the most impressive Revolver I have ever played! There are no ticks, clicks or pops and almost zero static! I cannot overstate how well it plays and the classic 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is a prime example of that, it is absolutely Mint in every single way, the audio is phenomenal!
The vinyl is visually so impressive and whilst there is some spindle wear this just goes to show how well this album has been preserved i.e. played only on high end equipment and always very carefully handled. This is a FINAL UPGRADE pressing, it really could not play with any greater precision.
The iconic G & L Patents pending cover is in fantastic condition with no obvious wear and it would be very difficult to find a better one. The original inner is also in excellent order.
This very early second pressing still has 'Dr. Robert' on the cover but has 'Doctor Robert' on the S2 label. This is the first label variation on the second pressing.

The vinyl is in superb condition and still has a lovely glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light there are some faint hairlines but there is nothing that stands out as obvious and they have no impact on the audio. Looking under a more forgiving light it is visually stunning! There is no groove wear and no dulling of the surface area and the run out grooves are also very clean. The yellow / black Parlophone labels are unmarked and just have some spindle wear around the centre circle.
Play grading
The 'countdown' intro on 'Taxman' has no background and Harrison's first vocal then plays with perfectly clarity. There is a real sense of power and depth to the audio and it continues to play with phenomenal quality and no interference, not even a dust tick! Harrison's brief mid solo is 'as new' (much like the rest of the track!) and the remainder is of the same high end standard - no background on the fade out either. This is a superb start to this classic album and there is no distortion on the top end which is a rarity for such an early pressing. I am confident in grading it as Mint such is the quality.
With complete silence in the dead wax the vocal intro on 'Eleanor Rigby' could not play any better. The opening vocal from McCartney is first verse is crystal clear and from then on the playback is STUNNING! I cannot emphasise enough just how clean and precise the audio is and there is nothing to detract from the pure Mint audio. You can hear every subtle nuance in the music i.e. it has lost lost of its original sonic quality and still sounds so 'fresh'. Wow!
'I'm Only Sleeping' keeps up this fine start to the album and plays with sublime quality from start to finish. The sonic quality again has not diminished in any way - the clarity and depth of the audio is unbelievably good! The vocal are 'pristine' and the mid instrumental has no intrusion either. To the final note it plays with infinite precision and the psychedelic 'outro' has only one mega quiet dust tick. Mint is still very much deserved.
If you win this just pay special attention to the tabla intro on 'Love You To'. In all honesty I have never heard better. There is a lot 'going on' musically with this track and yet there is no 'muddiness' to the sound and each note is again so sharp and precise. Harrison's vocal throughout is flawless and the instrumental passages are just incredible. The tabla sound is stunning! Mint
'Here, There And Everywhere' plays beautifully for a relatively quiet track and with no intrusion on the audio. It proceeds in the same way with only a handful of barely audible dust ticks that you could easily miss! The clarity is phenomenal and obviously there are no ticks, clicks, pops or background static. I will say Mint- but that may be a little harsh!
The classic 'Yellow Submarine' plays with outstanding depth and warmth and... no interference. You would perhaps expect some inner groove distortion by now but no there isn't any. It plays with impeccable clarity throughout and every note is as clean as it would have been when first pressed. Mint
'She Said She Said' ends the side with very impressive audio. The clarity and power of the audio is so good and if there is any inner groove distortion it is so so minimal and does not intrude on the quality of the 'listen'. I am playing this on my stereo set up so I am sure the audio could be enhanced when played as a mono record. Don't get me wrong it still plays with exceptional quality, there are no negatives. I will grade as Near Mint just to be a little cautious. WHAT A SIDE!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The intro on 'Good Day Sunshine' has not one dust tick, the clarity is perfect, and the first chorus and verse are of the same exact standard. Once again the clarity and definition of the audio is up there with the best I have ever heard and I only 'picked' up a hint of barely audible background static in a couple of places and I do mean barely audible. Mint- is a fair reflection of the audio, the playback is spectacular! A measure of the clarity you will on the fade out - so clean with not even a solitary dust tick.
'And Your Bird Can Sing' plays with STUNNING precision from the very first note. Little more needs to be said - this is such a powerful version and the sonic quality is 'as new'. A classic track that grades as Mint
The opening vocal on 'For No One' plays with crystal clear audio and this quality is maintained throughout. Another Mint track as there is no background whatsoever.
'Dr. / Doctor Robert' plays with wonderful power, depth and clarity and no interference. A hint of inner groove distortion? Again so so minimal and I am probably doing myself a disservice by even mentioning it. It remains a superb Mint- version.
The quiet build up intro on 'I Want To Tell You' is 'as new' and the first vocal is equally as strong. From then on it plays with great quality with no intrusion on the audio. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound, no loss in sonic quality at all. Mint
'Got To Get You Into My Life' plays with great quality with, you guessed it, no interference. If I'm being super harsh there is perhaps a minimal touch of inner groove distortion, but and I hate to repeat myself, it is so minimal and just what you expect anyway and does not take anything away from what is a super clean track. And another perfect fade out. The playback is so strong and deep and again Mint- is fair.
The classic 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is quite simply STUNNING! I have played it twice now and there are no faults. The cacophony of sound is unrivalled and I do not think I have ever heard a version as strong as this - the most 'complete' version you could say. It is of course such a 'busy' track and yet nothing is lost, it is full psychedelia in all its glory! The power and depth of the audio is second to none and Lennon's vocals also deserve a mention - they are so clean with literally no intrusion. I cannot praise this version highly enough. You have to turn it up to max to fully appreciate the STUNNING sonic quality and there is NO inner groove distortion. The clarity is also of the highest calibre, from the first note to the last and that includes the piano outro / fade out. This is a perfect MINT end to this classic and unique album.
In summary this very collectable album plays with sensational audio and NO interference. It has to be the finest 'Revolver' I have heard and I have listened to a few! Ok it's not a first 'withdrawn' mix but if you want a very early pressing playing with immaculate audio with that full deep and rich mono tone then this is the one to own! Only 'She Said She Said' has a touch of inner groove distortion but as I said it is so minimal and totally non-intrusive. The clarity, depth, resonance and warmth of the audio is on a level that you hardly ever find today and it easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic. There are so many highlights, very track basically, but 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is just STUNNING in every way and I cannot remember when I last heard it play with such distinction. Mono records play with a greater depth and resonance it is often said and that is very much in evidence when you find a vinyl as 'clean' as this. There are no ticks, clicks or pops and no obvious static either and this is why I listen to every album in full so as to provide the 'complete' grade. In conjunction with a lovely cover I am sure the winning bidder will be just as impressed as I am. A STUNNING album in every regard.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The laminated G & L Patents pending cover is in superb condition with no obvious wear and has been so well preserved down the years. It has kept its original shape and structure and has clearly not been handled very much. The edges are perfect with no rubbing / marking and the thin pinched spine is very close to that with just one very tiny indent in the centre that is not easy to spot! All the corners are super clean and you don't need me to tell you how rare that is and the opening edge has only the bare minimum of handling wear. The front cover is stunning - it is unmarked and has only a couple of minor laminate creases and a handful of the usual small faint crease lines next to the spine. The back cover, so often badly worn because it isn't laminated, is in FANTASTIC condition with no marking / writing and for once the flipbacks are still firmly attached to the cover with barely any of the staining that you so often see on the edges. The right hand flipback just has a small number of minor laminate creases. The picture of The Beatles and the track-listing / credits above is in exceptional condition and is quite possibly the best I have seen. I truly believe Near Mint- is an honest and fair grade for this iconic cover.
The original EMI inner is in excellent shape with no side splits or tears and only a little creasing. It has a record shop 'stamp' and the cat number which has been written in one corner. On the other side a cat number has been crossed out. This inner does have the Sgt. Peppers album on it but this is entirely possible as this Revolver pressing was produced between '66 and '69.
