Description
THE BEATLES aka THE WHITE ALBUM (Apple SWBO 101 with four pictures and poster, 1968): The cover's a '68 original with the embossing and is #0552094; it's VG with the typical 3-4" seams splits at the top openings. The white areas show darkening and a small stripe of white-out on the back (see last 3 photos). The two records are clean first pressings with the Capitol logo on the label; sides one, two, and three are M-. Only side four gets docked a notch to VG+. The poster and four pictures are M-.
This was the first album released on The Beatles' new Apple label in 1968, and it lived up to sales expectations by selling millions of copies worldwide. Artistic expectations were another matter. You can get into big arguments with Beatles loyalists by claiming (as we're about to) that this could have been a GREAT single album, but as a double LP it's...it's...flabby.
Hey, we love The Fabs too, but did we really need eight and a quarter minutes of Revolution 9? And even at 1:02, isn't Wild Honey Pie a bit overlong? At the risk of piling on: could the world have done without Ringo's songwriting expertise on Don't Pass Me By? And how about one of George's most forgettable songs, Long, Long, Long? (it's well-titled; it seems interminable!) Take these songs out, and lose a few other borderline candidates (we'll let you pick), and you've got a SUPERLATIVE single disc!
But it was not to be. By 1968 Our Heroes were four rich, self-indulgent prima donnas. They couldn't be bothered to prune out the deadwood, and had they tried, their bickering would have precluded any consensus about what to cut out. So they threw everything onto this LP for our edification. The Flab Four fell a bit short of the standard they set with SGT. PEPPER'S the year before.
Here's your chance to pick up this original masterpiece with all the pictures and the groovy poster without spending a fortune. One only!
