This is a brilliant original UK top loading album. A 1st Ever Pressing with NO EMI text on any of the labels, great AUDIO and an unbelievably low NUMBERED COVER. This is a great opportunity to buy a complete 1st ever pressing and one that is very rare.

 From my own personal collection, which my wife purchased when the album first came out from a record shop in Tooting London. Great sounding record.

The Beatles, also known as the White Album, is the ninth studio album and only double album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 22 November 1968. The colourful artwork that had adorned Sgt.Pepper's Lonely-Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour albums was absent here. The double wallet merely had the words “The BEATLES” embossed on the front cover. Early copies also had an individual number stamped on the front. Inside the package along with the two discs wrapped in black inner sleeves were four individual photographs of the guys and a folded poster containing a photo-collage with the lyrics to the songs on the reverse.

 The Beatles is recognised for its fragmentary style and diverse range of genres, including folk, British blues, ska, music hall and the avant-garde. It has since been viewed by some critics as a postmodern work, as well as among the greatest albums of all time.

Most of the songs on the album were written during March and April 1968 at a Transcendental Meditation course in Rishikesh, India. Following the recording of their single "Lady Madonna" in February, the Beatles flew to Rishikesh, India for several weeks of meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during which they enjoyed a prolific period of song writing. There, the only western instrument available to the band was the acoustic guitar; several of these songs remained acoustic on The Beatles and were recorded solo, or only by part of the group.

Recording began at Abbey Road on 30th May and studio work occupied most of their time until the final session in mid-October.

The Beatles was the group's first album to appear on the Apple label. The change from Parlophone to Apple had first taken place with the release of the "Hey Jude" single in August, 1968.

The production aesthetic ensured that the album's sound was scaled-down and less reliant on studio innovation than their previous releases including 1966's Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. The Beatles also broke with the band's tradition at the time of incorporating several musical styles in one song by keeping each piece of music consistently faithful to a select genre.

Despite the fact that it was a double album it entered the UK chart at no. 1 and occupied that position for eight of the 22weeks it spent in the chart. The US situation was even more impressive with a nine week stay in the top spot during an initial chart run of 65 weeks.

The mono release of The White Album differs from the stereo version on several songs. This makes for interesting listening for those who are intimately familiar with the US LPs, which were released in stereophonic sound only. One example is Eric Clapton’s guitar solo on the mono “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, which is more modulated and goes on longer before the fade-out.

The original UK mono double LP (PMC 7067-8) with –1 lacquer numbers, now 53 years old, has a warmth and naturalness to the vocals that is very appealing. In particular, the handclaps on Paul’s Beach Boys inspired “Back In The USSR” and John’s mocking “Dear Prudence” vocals sound very realistic. The ambience surrounding the drum kit and tambourine is also convincingly reproduced.

I have played the album several times for grading. It has been professionally cleaned using a Project machine.

This record, mostly has a great sound that can only be found on these rare 1st pressings.

Every track has been tested but there are 2 which jump as detailed below.

Side 1

“Back in the USSR”. Can often jump that was a pressing fault on some early releases. This is perfect and no faults.

“Dear Prudence”. Some light occasional static, no clicks or pops. Clear and bright

“Glass Onion”. Very good no faults, with just a hint of light static at the end.

“Obla Di Obla Da”. Sounds incredible, with no background noise or ticks.

“Honey Pie”. Plays well again with no background noise

“Bungalow Bill”. A few clicks on the quiet intro but nothing serious

“My Guitar Gently Weeps”. A majestic track with some light static but generally great sound. Eric Clapton's guitar solo goes on for a bit longer on this mono version. Sounds great.

“Happiness is a warm gun”. Great warm bright sound. No pops or clicks.

Side 2

“Martha My Dear”. Here there is some light static at the start of the track and unfortunately 1 small skip/jump, but not really obtrusive and the rest of the track sounds great.

“So Tired”. Plays really well with some light background static but no pops or clicks.

“Blackbird”. As one of the quietest tracks on the album, this is remarkable. Clear shimmering sound with no pops, just some light static.

“Piggies”. Another standout George Harrison track. Sounds great.

“Rocky Racoon”. A few light tics but plays well.

“Don’t Pass me by”. Super sounding track. Plays with no issues.

“Why Don’t we do it in the road”. Great with nonaudible clicks. Very light static

“I Will”. Very quiet track but plays really well with no issues.

“Julia”. Lovely song and sounds really good. Brilliant sound with maybe a hint of light static.

Side 3.

“Birthday”. Brilliant track, with raspy guitars and great vocals. No issues

“Yer Blues”. Bright and gutsy. Amazing sound. Clear and bright

“Mother Natures Son”. A little light static at the beginning but that’s it.

“Everybody's got something…….” Plays well with no problems

“Sexy Sadie”. Great sound but has a few light pops at the end

“Helter Skelter”. Plays brilliantly. Clear raucous sound

“Long Long Time”. Clear audio. Quality track and plays really well.

Side 4.

“Revolution 1”. Light static but good sounding track with no issues

“Honey Pie”. Sounds superb. Classic track

“Savoy Truffle”. Another great track and the audio on this is superb. A little light static

“Cry Baby Cry”. Unfortunately has a skip at the beginning but the rest of the track is fine.

“Can you take me back”. Sounds fine with no issues

Revolution 9”. A very divisive track but still sounds great here

“Good Night”. A little static but generally sounds superb. No pops or tics.

Generally, this is a fantastic White Album. It’s the combination of the Mono mix and the first pressing that somehow gives the record depth and warmth. Everything is clear and vibrant and all the instruments sound crisp. No comparison to a re-issue or re-release.

I would give the Audio a grading of VERY GOODPLUS, although there are 2 small skips.
