Visual grading
This vinyl is visually in excellent condition and has always been carefully handled down the years. There are some faint hairlines as you would expect caused by sleeve removal but there are no scratches. There are a couple of slightly more obvious hairlines on S1 but they have no affect on the audio. Some faint 'mottling' also on one small area of each side but again not to the detriment of the high quality audio. Overall for a genuine first pressing this is without doubt one of the cleaner ones you will find.
Play grading
S1 begins in fine style with barely any lead in static and then the intro on 'Yellow Submarine' is very clear with only a very minor touch of light static. The clarity on such a rare and collectable pressing is very impressive indeed and this continues throughout the track. There is nothing to detract from the quality of the audio, there are no clicks or pops at all. There is a minimal amount of static but it is so much in the background as to be negligible and even the fade out plays very clearly. 'Only A Northern Song' has a little static distortion on the intro which is commonplace but this soon dissipates and the remainder plays with very clear audio. There is a little static but it does not intrude on the quality of the listen and once again the clarity is of a very high standard when you consider this first pressing is nearly 50 years old now. No clicks or pops and only a little static on the fade out. 'All Together Now' begins in superb acoustic fashion with minimal static and then plays without fault. A superb version with no intrusive interference of any kind. Thus far this album is playing to a very high standard! 'Hey Bulldog' again has a little static on the top end of the intro but then plays with great clarity. This is a classic foot-tapping track and again I must compliment the clarity here. There is just nothing that interferes with the sublime quality of the audio. Even the 'loud' intro on 'It's All Too Much' plays extremely well with only a little static but it is worth saying there is no distortion. It then plays to an excellent standard which is all the more impressive as so often louder tracks play with a fair amount of distortion. Yes there is a little towards the end but in my opinion it is not intrusive and is only what you expect on a vinyl of this age. No clicks or pops! The fade out plays very clearly indeed. The dead wax into 'All You Need Is Love' is completely silent and this classic then plays very clearly but there is a little more distortion here. I think any Beatles' collector expects this as final tracks are regularly affected in this way where the grooves are often pressed closer together. It remains an excellent listen and there is very little 'background' on the long fade out.
'Pepperland' on S2 has only a couple of static sounds on the intro and then plays with wonderful clarity for the remainder. With only the odd dust tick audio does not get much better than this! It is not far a Near Mint grading in my opinion such is the clarity and depth on offer here. The long 'Sea Of Time/Holes' for example plays very clearly and of course it has many quiet passages. There is a little light static here and there but there is nothing that makes you think 'I wish that wasn't there!' I reiterate this vinyl is close to 50 years of age and overall the clarity here is exceptional and rarely will you hear such definition on a genuine first pressing. The other orchestral tracks on this side also impress with no intrusive clicks or pops and just mega light static here and there. The entire side plays with great clarity and precision and is certainly one of the cleanest I have ever heard. Much of this side plays as Near Mint the quality is stunning. 'Yellow Submarine In Pepperland' ends the side with fantastic audio - superb 'high end' clarity with a couple of very light clicks on the intro and only a modicum of background static thereafter. A very impressive ending to this highly sought after album. The last half in particular is absolutely stunning, it plays 'as new'.
In summary the audio here plays to an excellent standard. With only light static to be heard every now and then and a minimal amount of distortion the clarity is very impressive and especially so on S2. It's not often this rare and collectable pressing has only a couple of faint clicks and they are very faint! A great example of this iconic album.
The Cover
This G & L laminated flipback cover is in excellent condition overall with only a little shelf wear and has the red lines on it as already stated. The edges and thin spine are in superb shape with almost no wear. The bottom edge by the opening edge just has a little black ink on it over a 2cm area. There is a little corner wear although nothing major. The laminated front cover has no splits or lifting, just a little ringwear and a few small creases next to the spine and one crease near the bottom edge. The opening edge is very clean with only a little handling wear. The back cover is better than many you see and is very clean on the whole and the flipbacks have very little of the staining that you so often see and only a couple of small creases. The name 'KEN' can be seen just above the catalogue number top right. Overall a perfectly acceptable 'first press' cover.
Inner sleeve
The original black inner sleeve does have one quite large right hand side split and a very small one on the left side. There is no marking just some light creasing.
The labels
The Apple labels are very clean with no marking/writing just some spindle wear which is mainly around the spindle hole itself. There is no KT tax stamp on either label.
