Description
This is an original, unpeeled "Second State" Beatles "Butcher Cover" in very good condition.
When the original Yesterday and Today album cover was released, (featuring the band dressed in white smocks and covered with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of meat -said to be a statement against the Vietnam War), it was met with considerable controversy and pulled before they met shelves for sale. A small number of copies appeared nonetheless and these are considered "First State" Butcher covers. Capitol decided to glue over the offending cover with a more acceptable artwork of the boys and a trunk prop rather than remake the albums at considerable cost. These copies are known as "Second State" Butcher covers and you can tell by the dark triangle visible on the front cover towards the middle right side. Once the public got wind of the cover up, many people attempted to peel the outer cover to reveal the underside photo, and these are known as "Third State" Butcher covers. Our record cover here is in incredibly good condition with only slight wear and fading from age. The vinyl does have significant scratches on both sides, but plays without skipping. No splits on the seams, however the inner sleeve is not original. Because of the history and demand, this is one of the most sought-after rare records on the market, and it is especially hard to find a cover in this great of condition.
