Description
From the archive of noted James Brownj historian, Alan Leeds.
Incredibly rare....very few of these metallic acetate master references were cut. Few survived as most were eventually scrapped.
Okay THIS is a real collectors item!! First titled as A POT OF GRASS by DAVE MATHEWS AND HIS PEOPLE, the track was edited and briefly released as BrownStone 4201 as ACROSS THE TRACK by The Believers, then even more briefly with a new title, MR. HOT PANTS. Those original Brownstone singles are incredibly rare.
Here's the back story. The funky Dave Mathews composed and arranged track is actually by FRED WESLEY & THE J.B.'S. It was recorded at a marathon session on May 13, 1971 that also produced I'M A GREEDY MAN, the hit singles version of HOT PANTS and instrumentals MY BROTHER and the unissued TEXAS GREEN.
A POT OF GRASS/ACROSS THE TRACK/MR. HOT PANTS was eventually released on CD.
This acetate is probably the only surviving record of the unedited, complete track. (The flip side is blank).
NOTE: Acetate reference discs are not intended for repeated play - their function was as a TEST record.. HOWEVER, these play and sound great!
