Live at The Cafe Au Go Go is the debut album by the American, New York based band The Blues Project, recorded live during the Blues Bag four-day concert on the evenings of November 24–27, 1965 at the legendary Cafe Au Go Go on Bleecker Street, in Greenwich Village, New York City. The concerts proved to be one of the most excititng events during a busy weekend of folk and jazz concerts. The recording finished up in January, 1966 at the same venue, by which time Tommy Flanders had left the band. They scaled down their usual lengthy arrangements for the album due to time constraints and record label wariness. The Blues Project topped a long show that was filled with talented and exciting performers. They not only held their audience, but they drew cries of "more, more, more" after each encore. Fortunately, Verve/Forecast decided to record all four nights.
After seeing the show, Robert Shelton, New York Times Critic at the time wrote:
"Nearly a score in number paraded to the Cafe Au Go Go for four nights in what was the most unusual and perhaps most rewarding program of the weekend. This live recording session for Verve/Forecast Records was a study in the varied effects of the blues."
A must have vinyl record album for those who long for the days when up and coming bands as well as individual artists, who later made a name for themselves, graced the stage of the wonderful clubs that dotted the area in and around the Greenwich Village in New York City in the 1960s.
Anyone around who was there and remembers those days would certainly be inclined to declare—what a time it was!
