THE BYRDS Sweetheart of the Rodeo 1968 Columbia 1C/1C 1st Press CS9670 EX/EX

Released in August 1968, Sweetheart of the Rodeo is widely recognized as the first major country rock album — a record that pulled the Byrds away from psychedelia entirely and planted a flag in Nashville territory. Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, joined by a then-unknown Gram Parsons, recorded sessions split between Nashville and Los Angeles with an all-star cast of country session players: Lloyd Green and JayDee Maness on steel guitar, John Hartford on banjo, Clarence White on guitar, and Roy Huskey on bass. The result was something neither the rock world nor the Nashville establishment knew what to do with in 1968. History has been kinder — it's now considered one of the most influential American albums of its era.

Parsons is credited on the back cover and in the liner notes, but his lead vocals were largely suppressed before release due to a contractual dispute with Lee Hazlewood's LHI label. What you hear is a record shaped by his presence even where his voice was pulled back. "Hickory Wind" and "One Hundred Years From Now" — both Parsons compositions — survived. So did two previously unreleased Bob Dylan songs, "You Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Nothing Was Delivered," alongside material from Woody Guthrie, Merle Haggard, and the Louvin Brothers.

This is an original US first pressing on Columbia Records, red "360 Sound" stereo label with two square Columbia logos — the correct 2-eye label configuration for the 1968 original issue. Catalog number CS 9670.

The deadwax carries first lacquer cut designations on both sides — XSM 136653 -1C on Side 1 and XSM 136654 -1C on Side 2 — hand-etched, first generation lacquers from the original 1968 pressing run.
