The Byrds second album follows very much in the formula of the debut, and the rushed and harried sessions (and lack of solid new material) tends to show.   It's still great, but less so.   There are only two Dylan tunes here, and relatively weak ones at that.   The band recorded several versions of "The Times They Are-A-Changin'" with an eye to their next single, including one session attended by several Beatles, but none of them were any good.   Mainly because this folky classic just is not suited to a rock n' roll arrangement.   It sounds stiff and forced.   By contrast "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" sounds pretty good, with a nice heavy bassline accompanying well arranged vocal harmonies.   Even still, I find these to be the weakest on the album.   In fact, just about everything great about this record stems from the rather dark songs Gene Clark was turning in.   Unfortunately he would be gone from the band within months.   The highlights then are "Set You Free This Time" (which should have been a single) and "The World Turns All Around Her".   Their version of "Satisfied Mind" is pretty nice too, which removes any hint of country.   "If You're Gone" is another Gene Clark classic, with the droning note underneath giving it a special texture.   Closer "Oh Suzanna!" always seemed ridiculous to me, though I gather that ending the albums with a joke song was kind of their thing at the time.   To be honest, I find this version kind of interesting due to the minor chord structure.   Graced with another great cover photo though, this is another Byrds classic.
