Label/Format: Columbia – this being a very rare mono 360 sound example (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: CL 2454 (‘nonbreakable’ text).

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. About average for its era.

Rarity: Rare: 360 Sound monos are highly prized and elusive. Remember too, in the US, the mono format was phased-out far quicker than in the UK. Many mono records of this distant era are now unplayable and even trashed.

Original Year of Release: December 1965 in the US. [March 1966 in the UK, but never available in the 360 sound format].

Brief Info: Issued quite shortly after the superb debut, this wonderful album possibly had no right to be this good. But once again Gene Clark had enough great songs to complement the Dylan and traditional material and it even charted highly at number 11 in the UK (17 in the US). Stunning songs beautifully performed and sung, their redention of the title song for me has never been bettered by anyone and remains definitive, the amazing thing is they just got better and better on later albums, this band were simply one of the greatest ever. This is a fantastic US-pressed mono record with equally fine cover. The mono 360 mix still astonishes. The record has a few light surface marks, but they are practically all ignored and given the great age, mode and era of this record, it’s in super shape. You can imagine what most of these will be found like these days. A copy that gives clean and enjoyable sound and little else but that.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: all these early heavy card US sleeves are wear and damage prone, this fully intact and clean looking one will take some beating.

Cover Grade and Format: A very strong EX and given all the facts, its even better. A single unlaminated format with the vintage paste-on back panel. This has the text ‘Another Byrds album you will enjoy: Mr Tambourine Man’. The only other album available at this time of manufacture. Printed and made in the USA and has the same CL 2454 Cat. Number.

Cover Front: Very rich and deep coloured artwork that shows very little rubbing or blemishing and retains a genuine freshness. The odd few slight and fine surface marks and any rub traces confined to the very edges. Any friction traces minimal and faint and the only crease is a on the bottom left corner tip. This gives few clues to it’s great age and the lack of ink issues or grubbiness is fantastic news.

Cover Back: The back is even better and could easily grade Mint(-) on it’s own. The same corner crease apart, this is little short of as made. There is a tiny ‘3’ near the bottom right corner if that means anything to anyone?

Top Edge Almost as made, no rubbing or splits and dead straight.

Bottom Edge: Light rubbing only near each end, amazing for this fragile resting edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed, all text is perfect and unworn. Very slight traces of discolour being somewhat critical of a cover this fantastic age.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and slight, the bottom left has a mild dink-crease, almost the only noteworthy blemish on this lovely item. They retain fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: An amazingly preserved all round example of this very fragile mid-60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. These thick card US covers are brittle and delicate, long-term protection is hard. A real pleasure to see one in such lovely condition. This highly attractive item should please many collectors and being an original mono cover from their native country, it’s likely to appeal to the specialist connoisseur collector.

The Inner: Even the plain white, unlined inner has somehow survived unsplit or torn and in super condition with minimal traces of discolour and no creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: To grade this wonderful old mono record much less than Excellent would simply not be doing it any justice. It does not look played many times but does have a few very light surface marks. Most all are ultra fine hairline types seen under light with just one odd one or two very slightly more visible. One tiny mark on ‘Satisfied Mind’ has about half-a-dozen light ticks but there are barely any others of note. All the fine surface hairlines are all ignored and this record gives a fantastic account of itself. Simply compare to many mid-60s mono records seen, make no mistake, this is a lovely piece. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (never to be taken for granted), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Recorded with good volume and with a punchy production, the classic Rickenbacker sound will rarely be experienced better. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and few noteworthy clicks were noted bar those mentioned above briefly on ‘Satisfied Mind’ and this is an exceptional clean pressing. These are muted too with the volume of the recording, merely a brief reminder you are listening too a vinyl record of immense age. Some buyers even tell me they like this reminder as it’s part of the experience. The feeling of true authenticity compared with an over-clinical clearly predictable digital format. Given the type of record players these were potentially played on, this has more than survived those perilous days incredible well. One drop or jolt from a heavy-tracking mono arm and there’s another deep furrow or crater on the surface. This has nothing like that at all and this tracks effortlessly. Consider also, the potential damage to those fragile grooves with all the beautiful information locked away on them. Few copies will match or outperform this early 360 Sound pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and the audio quality is focused and highly enjoyable. The era of the mono record, the details on the US pressing are simply fantastic. If a totally unmarked copy is mandatory, well the search for the near impossible continues, but few US monos that made their way here to the UK will better this significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
