Label & Format: United Artists – rare first commercially available orange and and burgundy format with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks on side one are moderate, only a small few on two. I am certain these are deceptive in terms of number of plays with the playing surfaces clean with any surface marks fine and light. Sound quality remains very high throughout with little unwanted. A simple fact: many owners used the label as a guide to locate the spindle to the hole which often means spindle marks to record play ratios mean little or even nothing. Put even more simply: I can play a record 100 times and leave not a single spindle mark on a label – modern turntables allow easier location of the hole, whereas more vintage equipment made it far harder, especially concealed radiograms like my parents once had. These spindle show little with normal full-on viewing anyway, but are seen more under angled light. These are still two superb, and on this album, very rare labels with few copies even pressed with them.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very good weight for this album.

Rarity: This album was originally made as a private pressing and is one of the rarest classic rock albums ever made. First ‘commercial’ pressings were issued on this orange and burgundy label format in tiny numbers for the briefest time. That is why such copies carry the prized G and R stampers. Most-all copies are found on the more familiar cream and brown UA labels. Few record buyers would have shelled out on a new experimental German band at the time, only later did they establish themself in the new ‘Krautrock’ scene, Can being one of the pioneers of the new progressive sound. By then, the orange and burgundy label was gone, thus this is a highly prized album within the Krautrock genre. They are seldom seen or offered, any those few that do survive and surface for sale, often trashed. This is a lovely copy, indeed, if I did not already own a magnificent copy myself, this would not even be offered for sale. This for me, and others I know, being one of the greatest and groundbreaking albums of the late 1960s. Little had been heard like it before or since and ‘Monster Movie’ will always be a very special album for Krautrock and progressive rock fans.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a stagnant mess of sugary pop music. Out of the fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play a real instrument at all (Cluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were deep into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Cluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in higher grading conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably the definitive and most important of the German progressive bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Known affectionally as ‘Krautrock’ these types broke new barriers in rock music. Can took this art to new levels of creativity, spawning a host of immitators - few came close. Featuring the band’s original vocalist Malcolm Moony, a black American who gave his all. The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt’s karate chopping keyboard style was unusual, Czukay’s basslines had a throbbing twanging sound and rarely sounded better than on this album. Leipzeit’s percussion metronomic and is without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever, and the late, great Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the band’s music perfectly. Mooney, later replaced by the legendary Damo Suzuki, was a fine inventive vocalist who sung with great passion and intensity. With pulsating rhythms and extremes of style this is an exciting experience - was the world ready for this band? Can were the leading pioneers of this hugely creative genre. Not music for the casual listener, this had only limited sales, especially at the beginning, thus first issues are very hard to find with few even made. Even the second US issues are hardly abundant, the Spoon issued later pressings can be found a little more easily, but will not have quite the same impact for the connoisseur collector. This trip into the wonderful world of Krautrock will appeal to all fans of this legendary band. This record, their recognised debut album is truly amazing, it takes rock music to new levels of brilliance. A mix of three shorter songs on side one, and the stunning ‘Yoo Doo Right’ that was recorded live over a long period and edited down to occupy all of side two. The album is brilliantly produced too and sounds absolutely sublime when turned up high. This copy on offer is a strong one that sounds fantastic and I never tire of listening to it. Can albums are fast becoming extinct now and finding clean originals is becoming harder, especially the early titles. This is a very clean record, which plays impressively and with a splendid cover too. That equally difficult as the black unprotected back seldom wears well. For rock fans prepared to listen, this is around 40 minutes of the most compelling and original music you could wish for and I unreservedly recommend it.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical for a cover that seldom wears well. A single format with laminated front that wraps around the spine edge. Printed in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front & Laminate: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting of any note,and any dulling confined to the rim shape as seen under angled light – few will ever avoid this. A genuine 1969 cover, there is no disputing the age of this with the rare original label record inside. Only a few mostly fine and light surface creases that hardly even register when viewed full-on. The graphic retains deep vibrant colour and will not be easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: Unlaminated and matt black, a sure-fire recipe for ringwear, fingermarks and rubbing which are rarely avoided. Any rim rubbing on this one is almost as light as it gets and just a mild pressure rub near the top against the inside flipback construction. Light burring traces on the bottom storage edge again so hard to avoid totally after around 45 years. One fine press marks again shows little and the laminate end on the spine edge is neat and undamaged, this even retains excellent shine. Also this has amongst the least fingermarks I have seen on a ‘Monster Movie’ cover which makes a nice change. So an immensely challenging back still in very fine condition given all the perils faced by age and storage.

Top Edge: Thin but still quite straight with a lovely smooth laminated surface that has avoided scuffs or chips.

Bottom Edge: The main laminated fold as above. Only the end panel has thickened a little that few storage edges can hope to avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burr traces small and light as seen viewed more critically end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, fairly straight with with any compression patchy and light. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is present without any real issues solid and uncracked laminate, also well centred for good measure on a fairly narrow depth.

Corners: All in exceptional condition with barely even a hint of any wear, just one tiny tip rub on the back. Excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this delicate late 1960s cover, one that will prove difficult to find significantly better. Although not perfect, will one ever show up being honest? This lovely item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a small tear on the rear top entrance edge, that apart, almost as made. A very basic, plain white unlined inner. Barely creased with all edge seams unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very clean record with fine shiine and very solidly pressed. Played a few times but I still maintain the spindle marks on side one are deceptive. Most of any surface marks are ultra fine and whispy as seen with more scrutiny under bright angled light. Normal room light viewing gives this record a superb looking appearance with little seen. These true first, vintage Cans albums are very hard to find like this, this one the rarest commercially aviailable album made by them.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality This pioneering and groundbreaking prog-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault and offering super dynamic sound with loads of detail. Put this on to a quality deck and hear for yourself. Czukay’s basslines are clean, tight and stand out richly in the mix and have a incredible twang. Leipzeit’s drumming is astonishing with depth and power - the lengthy ‘You Doo Right’ on side two is pretty amazing with an addictive quality in the pulsating sound. UA records were not always the best for silent pressings, but little unwanted was heard on this one. Any surface sound gentle, faint, and certainly very infrequent. The pleasure in owning, holding and listening to a first United Artists copy gives that rare tingle factor – these are seldom seen or offered. A very fine copy that does near full justice to this mighty Krautrock album. Hi-Fi buffs will love this one too and it still blows away any CD version I have yet heard. A copy I can strongly recommend, for rock fans for an ear to listen, this album is indispensable and essential.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
