COUNTY RECORDING SERVICE
COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE UK CATALOGUE NUMBER COUN LP 128 / COUN LP 129 YEAR OF RELEASE circa 1968/69 ? CONDITION SUMMARY (Sleeve/Disc) EX(-)/EX(-) DESCRIPTION
Often overlooked group, due mainly to what felt like an ambundance of "On Top Of The World" popular private press on Nelmwood, that just seemed to be everywhere 10-15 years ago... However, collectors are only now realising the group have some merit, and even the relatively common "On Top Of The World" is becoming more scarce..
This is believed to be their first album, followed a few years later by "Sweet & Refreshing" and then "On Top Of The World" on Nelmswood, then later "Moonshine" on possibly the Cobweb label (but we will investigate this pressing more when it comes to listing it).
As the first LP, the sound is a more real lo-fi raw sound that makes this a delight for the true collectors out there, the popularity of "On Top Of The World" with it's more commercial and polished sound is what put many collectors off investigating this groups work... but this first LP is a definate must have.
This LP, "THE CARDINAL FOLK", the group were calling themselves "The Cardinal Folk" and hadn't shortened it to "The Cardinals". Pressed on the super small COUNTY RECORDING SERVICE label, not dated, but believed to be late 60's, and possibly only pressed in a quantity suitable for using as a momento of the band for the band, and possibly friends and family. County was known at this stage to offer a similar service to that of Deroy, and produce copies in quantities as small as 10 or 15 copies, to a more regular 100 copies, see records such as Levee Camp Moan for an idea of scarcity and value of blues/rock and folk LPs on this label (Levee Camp Moan "Peacock Farm" was on COUN LP 158 and dated 1969).
The Cardinals second album "Sweet And Refreshing" saw the group as a six piece folk group with Chris Berry, Anne Morris, Joe Nedjedly and John Edser...
The sleeve is plain white flipback matt sleeve, lightly discoloured, the front of the sleeve has "To Karen with all my love Joe", when flipped (rather than turned) the reverse has "THE CARDINAL FOLK, Chris, Joe, John, Anne, Julia, Bryony" written in pencil... looking at their second album, we can see that Chris (also sated on the label as Leader: C Berry) must be Chris Berry... Joe the person who signed the front being Joe Nedjedly... John will be John Edser...Anne is most likely Anne Morris (who was 17 in 1971, therefore probably only 14 on this record)... ... ... Chris, Anne and John were still performing as The Cardinals into the late 70's.
This record, features Julia and Bryony... who appear to have left the group after this was pressed.
Super rare folk LP, on the collectable County label, with femvox... it ticks so many of the right boxes... and being virtually impossible to find, makes this a very exciting little find.
