I’ve been collecting Checkmates 45’s since I joined eBay in 1999, and this was the final one I needed that I just picked up a few months ago, so that should give you an idea of how rare this is. The A-Side is a comedy novelty tune which might explain it’s rarity, it’s similar (in idea) to The Artwoods I'm Looking For A Saxophonist Doubling French Horn Wearing Size 37 Boots but just nowhere near as good. Basically, it’s a guy who sounds a bit like Ringo Starr, talking about not being able to sleep while the band next door plays a seedy sounding Mod jazz sax sound, perhaps a bit like the Peter Gunn Theme. The B-Side though is more like why I collected The Checkmates, and hints at Freakbeat to come, including from The Checkmates! Also, for Alan Hawkshaw collectors I’m pretty sure he was always a member of The Checkmates.
