Description

Vinyl:  VG++ Play Graded. Sounds Great!  There is a light mark that causes a soft tick sound in the background of side 2 song 5, for about 50 seconds.  Gold Elektra Labels are Clean and Bright.  This is the 1967 Elektra 1ST PRESSING!  EKS-74007.  This is the audiophile acclaimed Pressing, Pressed at Monarch Records Mfg. Corp., Los Angeles, CA!!  Monarch pressings are generally known to be punchier sounding:  warmer, deeper bass and drums.  They have perceptibly better presence.  You can sometimes even 'hear' the room they're recorded in, The vocals and highs are typically silkier and smoother, not so tipped up or hard sounding - even when compared against the same lacquer cutting pressed by a different facility.Plus, they have fatter bottom end on the bass and drums.  Monarch Pressings are peerless.
One of the Greatest Debuts In Rock/Popular Music History!  Not a bummer on here!  A wild ride.  The beginning of the saga of The Lizard King and his Dionysian revels.  Start with Break On Through...and follow through to The End...Instant Psychedelic Party!  One of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!!  allmusic gives it 5 stars!!

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?  First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.  First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.   On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.

The Doors Review by Richie Unterberger

A tremendous debut album, and indeed one of the best first-time outings in rock history, introducing the band's fusion of rock, blues, classical, jazz, and poetry with a knockout punch. The lean, spidery guitar and organ riffs interweave with a hypnotic menace, providing a seductive backdrop for Jim Morrison's captivating vocals and probing prose. "Light My Fire" was the cut that topped the charts and established the group as stars, but most of the rest of the album is just as impressive, including some of their best songs: the propulsive "Break on Through" (their first single), the beguiling mystery of "The Crystal Ship," the mysterious "End of the Night," "Take It as It Comes" (one of several tunes besides "Light My Fire" that also had hit potential), and the stomping rock of "Soul Kitchen" and "Twentieth Century Fox." The 11-minute Oedipal drama "The End" was the group at its most daring and, some would contend, overambitious. It was nonetheless a haunting cap to an album whose nonstop melodicism and dynamic tension would never be equaled by the group again, let alone bettered.
