The Electric Prunes 1st Mono Press 1967 (Debut)

This first mono pressing on the Reprise label plays to an excellent standard overall and S1 in particular is superb!  The majority is 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  S2 does have a little more interference but it is intermittent and there is only one brief section that is intrusive in my opinion.

The cover has been so well preserved and remains in excellent condition with very little wear.  The original inner has no side splits can you believe and is also in excellent order.

A first pressing has the A1*M matrix and 'Toonerville Trolley' is incorrectly spelt as 'Tunerville Trolley' on the back cover.

The vinyl does have some marking but in my opinion it is still in excellent shape at 54 years old and still has a very strong glossy sheen.  There are some hairlines on each side of which 3/4 are a little more obvious but there are no actual scratches impacting on the audio.  The run out grooves are very clean and the Reprise labels have no marking/writing just some spindle wear.

Play grading  

The intro on 'I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)' is superb with only a couple of dust ticks on the intro and the opening vocal is close to perfect with only one very light tick.  The first chorus is faultless and it continues to play with stunning clarity and power for the remainder.  There is no interference and this has to grade as Mint- such is the quality.

'Bangles' plays to the same 'high end' standard with no intrusion on the audio.  For a 54 year old record it is playing rather well so far!  On this track I only detected one barely audible tick and again this has to grade as Mint-

The quiet intro on 'Onie' plays beautifully and the first vocal has only a small number of very light background ticks which are obviously not intrusive in any way.  From then on it plays with stunning quality for such a restrained track.  Yes a handful of light ticks but again they do not impact on the audio 'experience'.  The clarity is very impressive overall and there is no background static.  Ex+

'Are You Lovin' Me More (But Enjoying It Less' has superb audio from the first groove to the last with no interference in between.  The audio is so rich and deep (helped so much by being a mono pressing) and the mid instrumental is a case in point.  A stunning Mint- version.

There is then one click in the dead wax prior to the start of 'Train For Tomorrow' which then plays with very strong audio.  There is just of hint of background static here and there but it is so so quiet as to be negligible.  The vocals are so clear and the long closing instrumental is absolutely stunning!  I will grade as Near Mint but the majority is better than that.

'Sold To The Highest Bidder' plays with stunning quality throughout with no sign of any interference.  The power and definition of the audio is so impressive when you consider it is the final track on the side and there barely any inner groove distortion if any.  What a version!  I honestly think it deserves a Mint- grade.

The intro on 'Get Me To The World On Time' plays with very clear audio but with a couple of ticks.  The opening vocal is flawless and it continues in the same way with barely any static.  A distinctly Stones feel to this track which is not surprising with Dave Hassinger on production duties.  The power and depth of the audio is good and there is no distortion on Lowe's 'high octane' vocal either.  The powerful end section also plays with amazing sonic quality.  Near Mint-

The majority of 'About A Quarter To Nine' plays very clearly but there are seven clicks in the middle section.  Aside from the clarity is very impressive with only a small number of insignificant ticks.  So for the most part this plays with Ex+ audio but the brief section of interference grades as VG- in my opinion.

'The King Is In The Counting House' plays with stunning clarity and warmth throughout.  I heard only a handful of ticks and a couple of light clicks on the final verse but the overall clarity is superb here.  Ex+

'Luvin' has three light static clicks on the intro and as the vocal comes in the playback is faultless.  It continues to play extremely well with no background static and just two quiet dull sounding clicks during the instrumental section.  The rest of the track plays with great quality.  Ex

The powerful 'Try Me On For Size' plays extremely well with no distortion and only a minimal touch of mega light background static.  It is so quiet and perhaps does not warrant a mention.  Perhaps it could be eradicated when played as a mono record as I am playing it through my stereo set up.  There are no ticks, clicks or pops and Near Mint- is deserved.

'The Toonerville Trolley' plays with stunning quality with no interference.  It's not often the final track provides the strongest audio on the side but it certainly does here!  The playback is 'as new' with tremendous clarity and depth from the first note to the last.  A Mint- end to the album.

In summary this collectable first mono pressing plays to an excellent standard and S1 in particular is stunning.  S2 has a little more interference but not very much I hasten to add.  This is an album that has been played so overall the clarity and definition is very impressive indeed.  I must admit this is the first time I have listened to this album and I was very pleasantly surprised!  It is a real eclectic mix of psychedelia, rock and pop - a great listen.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The 'Patents pending' G & L laminated cover is in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear.  The edges and thin pinched spine are perfect and there is hardly any corner wear either.  The opening edge has only a little handling wear.  The front cover is very clean with only a couple of laminate crease that are a little obvious and there are also a handful of faint creases next to the spine as per usual.  The back cover is not laminated and yet is in superb condition with barely any marking and the flipbacks are still firmly attached to the cover.  There is also hardly any staining on the flipback edges which is a rarity for a 54 year old cover!  A fine example overall.

The original picture inner is in fantastic condition when you consider it is made of paper!  Remarkably there are no side splits or tears, no marking and only a little creasing.

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
