THE FUGS : FUGS SECOND ALBUM  ( aka  THE FUGS )  (ESP 1028)

VINYL : NEAR MINT minus (NM-) : Heavy, black & shiny;  with a light pattern of very faint surface marks that are strictly cosmetic. This faint pattern was caused by (& matches up with) a series of tiny creases in the LP's original 40-year old paper inner sleeve. These faint marks are strictly cosmetic & do not affect play. There are no actual signs of wear or play on this vinyl. Perfect labels suggest that this LP was very seldom spun; record is close to a NM grade.

Record Labels:  Very sharp; on ESP - DISK; Customized; White w/ black; no spindle marks, writing etc.

COVER : NEAR MINT minus (NM-) : very colorful, rare psychedelic cover;  thick stock; small hole punch in upper right corner; spine and seams intact & sharp; spine is very legible w/ one small blemish; opening edge is sharp; there is very little corner wear; back cover is semi-glossy & shows very little wear; front cover is extremely vivid with very little wear; without the small hole punch mentioned above this cover would grade a solid Near Mint.

NOTE :
The front cover of this item is dated 1967 in the bottom left hand corner and the back cover shows the date to be 1966 (twice.) The very cool, psychedelic shield front cover evidently replaced an earlier one that featured a b&w photo of the group. The back cover of this item features some incredible, insightful liner notes by poet Allen Ginsburg (written in March of '66). This seldom seen & very collectible version of ESP 1028 has the second of 3 or 4 different front covers that ESP - Disk created for this title, FUGS SECOND ALBUM (which is shown on the labels as simply THE FUGS.)

"At the time of its release, the Fugs' second (self-titled) album contained the most outrageous lyrics ever heard on a Top 100 rock & roll LP. The group, with roots in New York's underground folk and poetry scenes, flung themselves wholeheartedly into all-out rock & roll on this 1966 record, which addresses concerns like free love, the madness of war, and government repression."

BEAR SAYS: " Here is a beautiful artifact of the mid-Sixties in excellent condition. This is an early copy of Fugs Second Album (as it is called on the cover's spine.) The LP is also known simply as THE FUGS. This may be the group's finest effort w/ classics like "Group Grope", "Dirty Old Man", "Kill For Peace", "Skin Flowers" and "Frenzy". Absolutely outrageous, even beyond Frank Zappa, THE FUGS may be sort of an acquired taste, very raw & perhaps not for everyone. The line-up features ED SANDERS, TULI KUPFERBERG & KEN WEAVER w/ Lee Crabtree, Pete Kearney, Vinnie Leary & John Anderson.  Both the LP & cover are in exceptional shape. A SIMPLE VINYL GRADING SYSTEM :

Mint : Still Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened
Mint minus (M-): New and Possibly Unplayed
Near Mint (NM): Like-new, with little or no visible wear
Near Mint minus (NM-): almost like-new, perhaps very slight signs of age/play/wear that are strictly cosmetic.
Excellent (EX)/Very Good double-plus (VG++): Way above average, very nice, no major flaws; played but not abused.
Very Good plus (VG+): An above average used album; a few visible surface marks/paper scuffs; slight surface noise.
Very Good (VG): An average used LP, far from perfect; w/ a few light scratches. Some noise; plays through, no skips.
Very Good minus (VG-): Reveals a lot of wear when viewed or spun but is not actually defective or warped. Possibly worth keeping until a better copy appears.

LP Cover grading is a much less exact, more subjective science. Generally, the truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent or VG++ depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams or spine, ring wear, cut or bent corners, hole punches, writing, water damage etc. should always be included in a proper auction listing. These factors will combine to determine the grade. Even so, my old boss & mentor used to tell 'em : "You can't play the cover"...
