THE GENTLEMEN
It's A Crying Shame
The Gentlemen were one of those remarkable garage bands that only released one 45rpm, but it's reached mythic proportions because it's so cool.
They were a quintet of kids from Kimball High School, in Oak Cliff (South Dallas) Texas. The group were Seab Meador, Mike Kelley, Bruce Bland, Tim Justin, and Tommy Turner. This single was cut for Vandan Records in 1966 and what a wigged out tune it is. Imagine what this band could have done after the Vox Wah Wah pedal was introduced at the end of the year.
The song "It's A Cry'n Shame" has appeared on many, many psychedelic compilations and is quite the prize among garage band record collectors. It's flipped with "You Can't Be True."
After the Gentlemen split up, Seab would turn up in the Werewolves, a Dallas based band that would get signed to RCA and cut two albums around 1978. The group was cut short by the death of Seab in 1980. He seemed to embody the expression: "Live fast, die young and leave a beautiful memory."
