Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle marks very few, fine and faint. I have never seen an original copy of this classic album so little used, any handling traces few, small and light.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 150 / 161 grams. Very impressive heavyweight first issues.

Rarity: Quite rare on the orange label, hardly a big seller here and most seen are later issues. The American original included a single folded sheet but never was here. So I have included a lovely repro of this rare insert just for good measure – a FREE extra for the winning bidder.

Brief Info: The band’s first live album and how could they resist this title? Overall, their fourth album and one of the most cherished by ‘Dead-Heads’, the name given to their fans of the day. Many consider it a masterpiece of stoned improvisation, note the back cover top area spells out the word ‘ACID’, the slang term for LSD. With trademark long tracks including the classic opener ‘Dark Star’, this includes stunning front cover artwork. The UK version initially came on the Warner orange format as here but never included the elusive and prized insert – so I include a superb repro taken from the real thing, a nice free extra for the winning bidder to make this example kind of complete. A set hardly played and sounding great on very clean records that without doubt, have hardly been played. Any surface sounds minor, very infrequent and faint and this is an album with some very quiet passages. This the first UK original I have seen for some considerable time and in terms of condition, the very best thus far. A classic and rare historic piece for the enthusiast.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Unprotected double sets usually means often severe ringwear and rubbing, and this will seldom be seen a great deal better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and this being quite conservative for a very intolerant cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: One of the classic rock covers of the 60s and one totally devoid of ring wear which is a massive bonus. In fact it has hardly any rubbing either but a few light press marks are seen when viewed under angled light, but normal viewing reveals hardly anything unwanted. Clean, very fresh with rich vibrant colour and hardly aged at all. Any creases are very few and ultra fine and barely even show. A really impressive front that does full justice to this wonderful artwork.

Cover Back: A couple of tiny chip near the bottom right edge and a relatively mild ring arc on the same edge. A very faint stain trace near the top probably from the inner adhesive, but look hard. That apart, little else to fault with any rubbing or creasing small and very light indeed. I consider this to have survived the years very well indeed. Of the small few of these I have seen – either original or reissue – most have considerable ring wear and rubbing and few even compare to this. Note the cleverly disguised ‘ACID’ graphic at the top.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Absolutely superb with practically nothing to fault.

Top Edges: Any rubbing is tiny, little and very light. Both very straight too.

Bottom Edges: Mostly light patchy rubbing, odd small area nearer moderate, but finding these storage edges with less will prove very difficult indeed. There are NO tip-ins on this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean and generally sharp with little wear and no trimming. Any thickening or burring small, little and minor. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite thick, straight with minimal compression. Folded square so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, this makes a real difference for the more discerning collector. All text is present and totally unworn, the white surface has the merest traces of darkening, but this being very critical on a cover this great age.

Corners: The corners have light to near moderate tip rubs and retain very fine shape. There is little rubbing on the actual main face areas of the cover and the rubbing seen more viewed end-on.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this beautiful, but wear-prone late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better as a UK original. One of the gems of the era and this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both the original polylined plain white inners are included – they are a mirror-image pair with the UK patent number and ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. These are a little aged with some discolouration but any creases are few and gentle. The polylinings are very clear as seen through four pristine window circles and there are no edge splits or repairs.

The Lyric Insert: No grading this is a repro, but a very nice one and as it was not included in the UK, this is a nice free extra.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to EXCELLENT(++): both records are in super condition and without doubt played little. Clean and heavily pressed with fine shine and attractive good looks. Any surface marks or blemishes are tiny, few and faint as seen under bright angled light. There are NO penetrating scratches on these impressive four sides. A set that should again please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to and most-all above their high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and very infrequent. An album that has quiet passages and total silence is almost unrealistic but few will better this significantly. Clearly well stored and carefully handled, this classic as a first pressing is very special and not seen often like this. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these impressive records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
