Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of ultra light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole. This quite delicate album plays superbly.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue. This record did not even chart in the UK and original copies are very difficult to find, especially in finer conditions. The cover especially seldom wears well and most seen are tatty, creased and badly rubbed. Most seen are later pressings on either the new green label with the Kinny catalogue number. This indeed so late, some orange label copies show dual matrixes which are: WS 1869 A-1 *T (K 46049 A1) / WS 1869 B-1 *T (K 46049 B1). This is one of the very few I have seen that ONLY have the correct and ultimate first WS matrixes and NO Kinney ones at all.

Brief Info: The band’s fourth studio album and fifth overall and this marked a change in direction. A far more softer style that is more like CSNY with vocal harmonies and a more folk-country sound – it is my personal favourite album within their sizeable catalogue. It all works perfectly and this album is regarded by many ‘Dead Heads’ as their finest ever album. Popular in the United States, but a poor seller in the UK, this was issued right on the fringe of the changeover to the new green label and then the new Kinney catalogue numbers, this copy being a genuine ‘full’ first issue with NO reference to Kinney at all. I personally regard this as one of the most elusive original UK Grateful Dead albums. Now regarded as a classic album and early UK orange label copies are very scarce indeed and seldom found in anything like decent condition. The cover is one of the most challenging to find in better conditions, often they had Kinney stickers applied that many pulled off with disasterous results. This one is really nice and lacking the usual ugly rubbing and ring wear most seem to acquire. The heavyweight record appears hardly played and offers lovely clean sound. For those still unfamiliar with this famous American band, there is not better place to start.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still with the least wear I have seen on the main front and back areas. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This only has the original WS 1869 number and no stickers. Printed in England by West Brothers Printers Ltd. The original heavy-duty polylined inner is included.

Cover Front: This unforgiving dark front is superb with hardly any rubbing (one corner tip apart) and any creasing on the edges very fine and light. Any ageing, marks or blemishes little, few and light with no sticker issues. A front that sets a very high standard and will prove hard to better.

Cover Back: The back is inverted, e.g. it has to be flipped top to bottom rather than left to right – I think all the originals were the same. Was this originally going to be a gatefold? Again, the main artwork area is hardly worn, the odd tiny surface chip or tiny rub trace only. The lack of ring wear is a huge plus. The retailer put the original pre-decimal asking price of 40/8 on the top right corner area – that translates to 40 shillings and eight pence (approx £2.03) in current money.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight, some very neat and fairly discrete enhancement from previous owner, this the only reason for my cautious grading – this cover to me looks better than Excellent (especially in context).

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still sharp with any thickening minuscule. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Again thin, but solid and straight with light compression in places. Any enhancement here appear minimal and again discrete, the crucial factor is all text is little short of perfect and beautifully centred on the narrow depth as-seen, including the important WE 1869 catalogue number. Most I have seen have been badly eroded, often with no text left at all.

Corners: Any obvious tip rubbing small and light, again possibly enhanced, but well done by clearly a fussy and careful previous owner. No knocks so very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult sleeve and an original one, beware of substitutes with the different catalogue number. With the most important areas being the front, back and spine still looking very impressive, this should please many collectors. Finding one of these anything like ‘perfect’ is an immense task, the heavy record inside never ‘cover-friendly’, which reiterates how fine these areas. Any edge enhancements are neat and far less obvious than some do them, but present nonetheless, so this is not for absolute perfectionist.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): the heavy-duty polylined inner is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Darkened on the seam areas, so aged with some natural crinkle and a little corner creasing, but two immaculate window circles and the lining clear with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played with any surface traces almost minuscule and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb melodic album plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
