Description

THE HIGH NUMBERS (aka THE WHO) - Zoot Suit/I'm The Face (Fontana TF480) UK 7" 1964 - promo copy (designated by "sample record - not for sale" sticker on label)

This item comes from a private collection that has been in temperature-controlled storage for 30 years. The vinyl is mint  unplayed. I have about 10,000 items from this collection to list. Please bookmark my shop to ensure you don't miss anything!

I don't need to tell you that this is a special record - a holy grail for collectors of The Who and 60's music in general.

As a serious collector myself, I cannot describe the thrill when I opened a box that had been sealed for 30 years, to find this little gem looking up at me. For interested parties I will try and give as much information as possible about the history of this stunning copy.

Without going into too much detail, the basic story is that The Who released their first record in 1964, and were persuaded by their management to change their name to The High Numbers, and so we have this solitary release under that name before they reverted back the The Who...and the rest is history.

This particular copy has an interesting provenance, and I will try and give as much information as I can.

This copy was sent by Fontana to the BBC World Service in Hong Kong, and was booked into the record library on the 10th July 1964. It was placed in a brown record sleeve (see picture) with the song titles and other details typed and written on the sleeve. There is also a small square sticker on one label (see picture) that was added by the library to assist in their filing system.

As far as can be ascertained, this copy was never played by the BBC in Hong Kong, as all plays were required to be logged on the sleeve, and there are no marks on the sleeve to indicate this.

Around 1980 this copy was transferred from the library and put into temperature controlled storage in the UK. It was taken out of storage in 2010.

As you can see by the pictures, it is a stunning copy, very clean with all of the original sheen, and as far as I know it has never been played. I have not played it myself but I can assume it will play perfectly.

The labels (apart from the promo and library stickers) are clean, there are no spindle marks. I have noticed that the centre ring of the "A" side is a little darker than the rest of the label (see pictures), I believe this to be the vagaries of the label-printing process.

I have added a Fontana company sleeve to complete the set.
