Label/Format: Parlophone – matt, smooth surfaces with the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side one. Both these fragile details almost pristine. This includes the ‘Sold in the U.K. …’ text as seen.

Label Conditions: Both in supreme conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks on side one, and hardly anything on two, there is no wear around the hole area. A truly beautiful hardly played original mono record.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: The third Hollies album, latterly referred to by some as Hollies 65 due to a 1974 album being called the same. Surprisingly, this includes no hit singles, the only song issued as a 45 as a B-side only was ‘So Lonely’. It did not stop it selling quite well, but that said, it is one of the most elusive in the 1960s Hollies catalogue. This copy is a beauty: it appears hardly played and offers little short of pristine mono sound. The cover being equally impressive and hardly aged at all, that too with copious amouts of white. Another high potential upgrade album, this fantastic example will a lot of beating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the close edges and ends atop of three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the original polylined style inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling, even viewed under light. Very gentle rim impression almost impossible to avoid from the thick heavy record, and this being around 50 years old. However, few clues to this fact, this is a beauty. It has no lifting and any of the few fine laminate creases being light and faint with minimal visibility on predominately white artwork. A few very gentle and minor surface marks when scrutinised up close, but it will take an exceptional example to better this impressive front that lacks the usual darkening and toning to the artwork. Even the fine exposed strip on the laminate end right has barely any wear or grubbiness.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive with minimal traces of grubbiness or ageing to the white areas. Hardly any rubbing and no rim impression or ringwear to the main unprotected panel, only a hint of a faint crease near to top right that hardly even shows. There is a ‘D1’ stamp under the PMC 1261 catalogue number, I really do not know what this means, possibly a retailer’s price code? – but that is a guess. All three flipbacks are in superb condition with crisp neat ends and no burring and barely any hint of grubbiness – all solid, crisp and undamaged or lifted. A few fine laminate hairlines are near impossible to avoid as a minimal along with the odd tiny corner tip crease. So a superb back to match the impressive front.

Top Edge: Smooth, unscuffed or rubbed with any hint of bowing gentle and light. .

Bottom Edge: Similar with just a very small rub and the odd tiny chip. Highly commendable for a storage edge this fantastic age.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring light , this on the back as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine with the merest hint of bowing only, and few will be dead straight after all this time. Solid, quite straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate which remains ultra smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs.

Corners: Generally light and small tip rubs, a couple a little more but still less than moderate. Very fine to excellent shape retained with just the odd tiny tip crease or two.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage original ‘Patents pending’ 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors. Another with high upgrade potential.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this being very critical, practically Mint(–) and hardly aged. Any darkening minimal and gentle. Two pristine window circles with very clear, fresh polylining, no creasing of any note with all edges unsplit (and no repairs). This also includes ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text, like the rest of this album, it will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and very arguably better still, with only ultra fine and faint whispy surface traces seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. A super 50-year-old visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with no penetrating stylus scratches. Viewed in normal room light, hardly anything is even seen and it will take a near remarkable example to better this. Visually a very impressive mono record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered, this being played on a hugely revealing stereo system for which these vintage mono records were not really designed, overall an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will match, let outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this being my first copy of this one. We all know what type of condition such records are usually found in – this defies its age and mode and will prove very difficult to find significantly better, strong recommendation is mandatory .

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
