SETTING SONS

In the UK, the Jam were the most succesful British band of the early 1980's. 4 number one's ('Going underground', 'Start', 'Town called Malice' and 'Beat surrender') and several top ten hits in the period 1980-82.

The group compromising Paul Weller on vocals and guitars, Bruce Foxton on bass and Rick Butler on drums started out as a punk band before drifting towards 60's-inspired soul-songs. Their songs were probably too British and too political to make it in the US at that time. This album catches them at their peak in their mid-career. The punk energy is still present, although a little tamed, and they have found their own sound- built around the booming bass of one of the best bassists of the generation clashing with the guitar sounds of Paul Weller.

 This was originally designed as a concept album built around the idea of school friends who go in very different directions- one getting a job in the city and abandoning his ideals, the other still fighting for radical causes.

IN THE CITY - LIMITED EDITION ON COLORED VINYL - POLYDOR RECORDS PD-1-6110 - Funneling the punk Spirit of '77 through the grooves of old Mod and Motown records, Jam frontman Paul Weller created a sound and vision that took Britain by storm but never made much noise in the USA. That's a shame because at the band's best, as on this album's furious, Who-meets-The-Pistols title track, The Jam played nothing less than great rock and roll. Their explosive cover of "Slow Down" destroys The Beatles', and "Non-stop Dancing," which sounds like a cover of an old R&B hit but is actually a Weller original, has a charm and desperate energy that more than makes up for its derivative qualities.
