Nothing in the annals of popular music – and certainly nothing in the girl-group genre - approaches the title track of this monstrously rare album in terms of sheer mystery and mystique. Released in September 1963, the title track has been a subject of heated debate, speculation and controversy ever since. Any number of theories has been thrown around as to what the song’s lyrics actually mean, ranging from the mental breakdown of the young girl abandoned by her boyfriend, to a case of paranoia/schizophrenia, to lesbian love affair, to suicide, homicide or both. You name it, we’ve heard it. To compound the song’s mystique and controversy, the ethereal, somewhat otherworldly and disembodied girl-choir (which lacks clear lead vocal and sounds like something from a twilight zone) and the distant, hypnotic arrangement, only add fuel to the fire.  Despite its enduring mystery – or perhaps precisely because of it – the song has been a target of numerous cover attempts by other – mostly white and psychedelic – artists, from Grace Slick and the Great Society, to Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, Pentangle, Question Mark and the Mysterians,  Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and others. A true classic!

***

A rare album that sells for at least a C-note if you can find a copy. The haunting title track, its successor "Keep an Eye on Her," and "Dear Abby" are the centerpieces. "Abby," credited to the Hearts, is a strange but effective innocent teen number that got it share of spins; the Hearts seek the advice of columnist Dear Abby and threaten to go outside and eat worms if their hearts aren't soothed. The Jaynettes sang on the Hearts' recordings and vice versa. Producer Abner Specter used whoever to achieve that sound, and singers like Baby Washington constantly dropped by. Also decent are "Seesaw," "One Track Mind," "Pick up My Marbles," and "Archie's Melody." There's also a popular instrumental of "Sally"; Spector hated wasting good cuts as B-sides so he used instrumentals and captioned them: "Sing Along Without the Jaynettes" or "Sing Along Without the Hearts," a very popular concept back in the day.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS AND IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
