Description
From the archive of noted James Brown historian, Alan Leeds. This is a super rare - only known surviving copy - test record of the UNISSUED People LP 5603 - WATERMELON MAN by Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s..
WATERMELON MAN is essentially a Fred Wesley album, accompanied on most tracks by a crack New York studio band instead of the actual J.B.'s. People LP 5603 was scheduled for release in the spring of 1973, but was cancelled before any retail copies were pressed. The release number was reassigned to DOING IT TO DEATH, a completely different album by Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s.. Some of the tracks on this record were eventually issued on singles. Others remained unissued until bootleg CD's of this album appeared many years later.
Test pressings were only distributed to record company and James Brown Productions execs thus pressed in very small numbers. Few survived as most were eventually scrapped so they can be considered very rare. Song titles and release number are hand written on both labels.
