The Jimi Hendrix Experience Axis : Bold As Love A1/B1 1st Press + Orig Insert

This first mono pressing on the Track Record label could hardly play any better.  With only one light click on S2 the clarity of sound is stunning and this is clearly a vinyl that has been so well looked after over the last 55 years.  The power and depth of the audio is so impressive and the total lack of distortion pays testament to how little it has been played.  The classic Bold As Love is a prime example of that, the sonic quality on this track is incredible and I have certainly never heard a stronger version.  That pretty much applies to every track!

The vinyl is visually stunning with only some light hairlines and the gatefold is as close to perfect as is possible!  It really is in beautiful condition and for it to remain in such pristine shape is so so rare you don't need me to tell you that!  The often elusive original orange lyric insert is also included and remains in superb condition with only very light creasing and the original inner is in great condition also.  One STUNNING 'package'!

This first pressing was released on the Track Record label and has silver / black labels and an A1/B1 matrix.  The cover is laminated front and back.

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no obvious marks or scratches.  There are some faint sleeve removal hairlines but they can only be seen under a strong bright light.  There is no bag rash or groove wear and the run out grooves are super clean also.  The Track Record labels are unmarked and have only minimal faint spindle wear.  A superb example and rarely seen as good as this!

Play grading  

The experimental 'EXP' plays with wonderful clarity and warmth from start to finish.  The opening grooves on any record will often have some static, especially on a record as old as this, and yet there is barely any here!  The 'feedback' section plays with stunning quality and it has to grade as Near Mint at the very least.

'Up From The Skies' plays with exceptional quality with a clarity of sound that cannot be faulted.  I detected only a couple of mega light ticks but they are so much in the background - you can barely hear them.  There is just half a second of minor static distortion in the mid section but overall the sonic quality is as strong as it was back in '67.  I will grade as Near Mint but as per the first track the majority is better than that.

The 'heavy' intro on 'Spanish Castle Magic' is 'as new' and Hendrix's opening vocal is just as good.  From then on it plays with a clarity and power that is second to none, the playback is spectacular!  This more than demonstrates his incredible guitar work and because the vinyl is so clean the dynamic sound is undiminished.  Honestly the sonic quality here is just incredible!  This is Mint in every single way.

'Wait Until Tomorrow' keeps up this high end standard with sublime clarity from the first note to the last.  One very light background tick during the brief mid instrumental but really you cannot fault the audio here.  The audio is crystal clear and once it more it shows just how little this classic record has been played.  An example of this is the fade out which has no intrusion whatsoever.  A Mint- version for sure and perhaps even the minus is a little harsh!

The brief 'Ain't No Telling' plays with stunning power throughout and again there is no interference, just one mega light tick on the fade out.  Mint-

The intro on the classic 'Little Wing' plays so clearly and again 'as new' is a fair assessment.  Each note is so clean and precise and this carries on into the first vocal.  It continues to play with impeccable quality with no ticks, clicks, pops or static and you can hear each Glockenspiel note perfectly!  No faults really this is Mint- with just a barely audible tick at the end of the fade out again.

'If Six Was Nine' plays with genuine quality from the get go and the opening vocal has no background either.  For a final track the audio is so impressive and the long mid instrumental plays is a prime example of that with no 'muddiness' to the sound at all.  The remainder plays with great quality also and if there is any inner groove distortion I did not notice it!  A stunning Mint- version.

The intro on 'You've Got Me Floating' plays perfectly as does the first vocal from Hendrix including the backing from Wood and Burton.  It progresses in the same way with nothing to detract from the audio and provides a Mint start to S2.

'Castles Made Of Sand' has one light dull click on the intro and that is literally the only intrusion on the entire track.  A lower key track the clarity is superb throughout and by that I mean no interference not even any background static.  Outstanding clarity!  This would be Mint but for that one click right at the start but Near Mint is certainly deserved.

Redding's composition 'She's So Fine' plays with stunning quality throughout and no sign of any interference, just a hint of light static on the fade out so I will grade as Mint- accordingly.

The intro on 'One Rainy Wish', reminiscent of what was to come on Ladyland, plays so well with just one easily missed light tick.  It continues to play with a quality that belies the age of the album and I detected only a couple of barely audible background ticks.  The rockier chorus plays perfectly and the guitar work is also phenomenal - so clear and dynamic and again the original sonic quality is still there.  A wonderful track and Mint- is deserved.

'Little Miss Lover' plays with imperious quality from the get go.  Mitchell's percussive intro is flawless as is the rest of the track.  There is no distortion on the top end and the power and depth of the guitar work - wow I have no words!  Mint

The absolute classic 'Bold As Love' ends the album in fine style with a clarity and power that is just awesome!  I hate using that word but it applies here!  The opening verse and chorus play with sublime quality and it continues in the same exact way with no intrusion.  What can I say about one of the finest solos known to man?!  It plays with phenomenal quality and I am delighted to say there is no distortion on the top end.  The phasing has never played better and the depth and power of the music here is just incredible.  STUNNING!  This quality prevails to the very end and even the long fade out is so clean and precise.  What a STUNNING version!  I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint such is the quality on offer here.  It's rare for any final track to be graded as Mint and especially one of such advanced years!

In summary this first pressing plays with a clarity, depth and power that is hugely impressive to say the least.  With barely any intrusion on the audio the sonic quality is genuinely on another level.  Just one light click on S2 and no other intrusion that's how good the audio is!  In a sense this is not surprising as the vinyl is so clean and has obviously not been played very much.  This has to be one of the finest examples of this classic that I have ever sold and I have no doubt the winning bidder will be just as impressed as I am.  A superb cover and lyric insert also!

The Gatefold, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve

This iconic E.J. Day laminated cover is in beautiful condition and I am finding it hard to find any negatives!  It has been so well preserved and has probably spent the majority of its life inside a pvc sleeve!  The edges and spine are immaculate and there is no obvious corner wear either.  The opening edge is also in superb shape with barely any handling wear and the front cover is absolutely stunning!  It is unmarked, has no creases and has retained all of its original colouring perfectly.  The same applies to the back cover and the inside is in fantastic condition also.  The flipbacks remain firmly attached to the cover and have no marking / staining on the edges.  A handful of tiny rubs but so minor and not worth a mention if I'm honest!  I'm just trying to find something that means the description isn't all positive!  Oh it does have a slightly wavy feel to it but it isn't visible really and has no impact on the external 'look' / feel.  A STUNNING cover and easily the best example I have ever seen.

The original orange lyric insert is in superb condition with no marking or tears and only the bare minimum of light creasing.

The original poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner is not surprisingly super clean with barely any marking and has no side splits or tears either.  Just some minor creasing and a minimal age related fading along the top edges.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
