Description

THE KINKS "ARTHUR (OR THE DECLINE & FALL O THE BRITISH EMPIRE)" LP (Reprise) RS-6366 VG+/M-

Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), is the seventh studio LP by English group the Kinks, released in October 1969. Kinks leader Ray Davies constructed the concept album as the soundtrack to a Granada TV play and developed the storyline with novelist Julian Mitchell; but the television program was never produced. The rough plot revolved around Arthur Morgan, a carpet-layer, who was based on Ray and guitarist Dave Davies' brother-in-law Arthur, who had recently emigrated to Australia. The album  initially met with poor sales but nearly unanimous acclaim, especially among the American music press. Although Arthur and its first two singles, "Drivin’" and "Shangri-La", failed to chart in the UK, the Kinks returned to the Billboard charts after a two-year absence with "Victoria", the lead single in the US, peaking at number 62. The album itself reached number 105 on the Billboard charts, their highest position since 1965.

Side 1 1. Victoria 2. Yes Sir, No Sir 3. Some Mother's Son 4. Drivin' 5. Brainwashed 6. Australia
Side 2 1. Shangri-La 2. Mr. Churchill Says 3. She Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina 4. Young & Innocent Days 5. Nothing To Say 6. Arthur
Gatefold cover retains its sheen & looks nearly new.  The only flaws are very light shelf wear along bottom & left side & a minuscule tear along the top edge where the front overlay is folded. It is graded a strong VG+ condition. The record has the original brown & orange Reprise "steamboat" labels. There are no spindle marks & has received just a few plays. Only a few ultra light hairlines (that do not affect play) deter it from a MINT grading. It comes complete with the die-cut lyric insert pull-out. The front depicts a color rendition of a fat Queen Victoria while the reverse has lyrics to all 12 songs on the album. It is also in near MINT condition.
